Does the teacher matter a lot at AOPS?

Anonymous
Hi! We are planning on continuing with AOPs-this year for geometry. We had the same teacher for the last two years and loved them but due to scheduling need to switch to a different day. How much does the teacher matter?

I just checked the current geometry course schedule at the Vienna campus. All four teachers are really good. I don't think you have to worry about anything.

I don't think the teacher matters anywhere as much as the peer group.. if there are many rowdy and disruptive kids, you can be sure learning will be much more unpleasant than in a class with lots of motivated kids.

I think this is an advanced program so would matter but we have no experience yet with Geometry at AOPs Gaithersburg.

The teachers at both campuses are great. Ultimately peer group will matter if there are multiple disruptive kids in a particular class. But there's not much you can do to control for that; it's mostly luck.

NP here: I never thought that there could be disruptive kids in a class at this level-this is not a public school.

Sorry - this is a side question.

You are having your kid take geometry at AOPS. What is your kid currently taking in school?

I’m trying to figure out what is normal when signing kids up there.

There's always disruptive kids at the elementary/middle school age. There may be less than public school on average, but they do exist. This is an enrichment program and like all other enrichment programs they can only filter for ability for a specific class, not for behavior.

My kid will be in Geometry this year at Middle School. We preferred keeping it this way rather than accelarate.

PP again: Also depends on the kid-if they are exceptionally brilliant in math, feel free to advance them

Of course they can filter for behavior. They aren't bound by crazy equity laws.
