DS is 16 and around 5’10” 125. Later bloomer and most of the height is recent (grew about 5in in the past 12mos), might have a bit more to go.
He has been trying so hard to gain weight (weight room, eating more etc) and really having no luck, and is getting so frustrated. I have an eval scheduled for him at a training place in a few weeks, but did anyone else’s DS have this issue? Did anything work? I’m not sure if this is just his natural build (after all, some guys are just slender), if he will naturally fill out when he grows (maybe not far along enough in puberty yet?), or if this is all up to diet/nutrition/weights etc? Mostly is wanting to get stronger for his sport, and look more mature. |

This was me.
I’m 6’2 / 215 now at 40. Trying to push back down to 200. He’ll fill out but it will take time. I wouldn’t try to “solve” anything with junk food. He should enjoy being thin while it lasts. In the meantime, encourage cross country and discourage football lol |
This sounds like DH. He was 6'1" and 195 before kids. Now, with kids, stress, and Zoloft, he's over 225 and trying to get back to 200. It'll happen, OP. There's no reason to do anything. With a young healthy metabolism, he can eat anything now but someday he won't be able to do focus on healthy balanced meals. |
Thanks- I’m inclined toward encouraging body acceptance (as I would be a daughter as long as she was being healthy), but seems so different with a boy somehow. I grew up with all sisters so this seems so foreign right now! Fortunately he knows football would be a real stretch and hasn’t shown interest 🤣 |
| My kid was about the same and put on 10 lbs this summer so I expect he might be 140 5'10 at Christmas. Weight training with sports team (i.e. accurate guidance and consistency), playing a sport, and eating like mad. Protein shakes (Core Power is his favorite but he has powders he mixes with whole milk), lots of ice cream, more meat (we got a countertop grill for chicken), eggs and protein waffles for breakfast, unrestricted snacks and meals. He likes to cook and is capable in the kitchen. He gravitates to fruit and salad so it's been an uphill battle! |

This was my dd in early teens. I recall an interesting doctor's appointment. The doctor suggested various foods to eat. DD said, "but I like vegetables!" Doctor said. "That's great. Absolutely eat vegetables. But try putting melted butter on top! Or look up recipes for a cream sauce!" (Quite the opposite of my own doctor's appts, I must say!).

| Not yet. He's 19, 5'5" and 105lbs. It's difficult to find him small enough waistbands, honestly. |
| Does he not eat much? Teens boys should be eating A LOT |
| My kid is 17, 5’10” and 136 lbs. He’s been drinking high calorie drinks, eating a lot of protein and lifting weights all summer. He’s gained 6 lbs. I was a beanpole until I had kids, despite eating everything in sight. Genetics are strong! |

My 16-year-old DS is 5'10" and 135lbs three months ago. Over the summer, he followed the following diet and gained 25lbs, mainly muscle, by eating around 5,000 calories a day:
6am: One avocado, one banana, one apple, seven white eggs with edamame, zuchini, and spinach, 7am: workout at the gym 9am: two glasses of goat milk, one avocado, one banana, one piece of toast with peanut butter, 10am: 60 minutes of endurance training, 12pm: one pound of chicken with steamed veggies, and quinoa, and a glass of milk, 1pm: take an hour's nap, 3pm: one avocado, one banana, three servings of almond, pistachio, and sunflower seeds, 4pm: 45 minutes of lifting weight, 6:30pm: one pound of either chicken or tuna/salmon/lobster, steamed vegetable, quiona, and a glass of milk He had his physical last Friday, and weighed in at 160 pounds. I don't think it is that difficult, but YMMV. |

My dh didn’t weigh over 100 pounds till his freshman year of high school. He didn’t grow taller until freshman year of college (isn’t very tall now but average height).
Our oldest is taking after him. Genetics is strong! |
He’s never had the naturally huge appetite that some teen boys seem to have, no. Maybe some days he does (varies a bit)? However he made a huge effort this summer (basically ate about twice as much as normal) and only gained 5lbs-7lbs much to his dismay. Also grew 1-2 inches so didn’t really gain any ground, so to speak. |
| Yes it will happen eventually. My son was like this he’s now 6’2” headed to college and is thrilled he almost hit 160. I expect he’ll gain another 20 pounds in college but he feels good about himself now. The filling out is much easier once he stops shooting up. But for my son (also an athlete) he ate a large bowl of ice cream every night, I started cooking steak for him even though I don’t eat red meat; his chipotle order is a burrito and 3 tacos. He lifts with a trainer 1 x week in addition to his sports practices and he takes Kreitien. |
Thanks so much for this! Some really good ideas. He made a huge effort to eat more this summer but I think his diet definitely needs some tweaking. I want to say he was eating about 4K calories based on his tracking, which probably is not quite enough. |
