We moved to the DC area this summer and my DC tested into Level IV AAP. We were in a rush and chose the base school over the center because we were told the base school had a full-time AAP curriculum no different than the center and wanted to try our neighborhood school. However after going to an open house for the base school we are starting to have regrets about choosing the base school. This is due to a number of factors that became evident after meeting the teachers and administrators.
Are students able to transfer to the center schools mid-year or would we have to wait until β24-25 school year to make the switch? |

You are overthinking this and have FOMO. They all follow the same set of standards. There are not magical, mystical teachers at one school over the other. Itβs more the same than different. |
The school year hasn't started yet. Have you contacted the center school and asked? |
Wow. You're going to be a nightmare. |
If you want your child at the center I would contact the school first thing tomorrow and ask if there's space and what that process would be to switch. It would be so hard for an elementary kid to have move schools again nxt year after starting new this year too. I wouldn't complain about the local program but say you didn't understand the difference btwn centers and LLIV etc. |
If you move quickly, you could make this happen. I believe Thursday this week is they day they want to make everything form with class assignments barring change of address or emergencies (which this wouldn't be).
Our Center has fairly small classes, and could easily accommodate one more. |
We are facing not quite the same situation, but are now considering if we should switch to Center.
Our base school used to have a local level IV program that kept the AAP kids together in separate classes for the core subjects, but without telling anyone until the end of last week, the school switched to clusters. So no more separate classes for AAP. We are wondering if the center can make exceptions now for the families of AAP students at our base school who want their kids in more rigorous AAP classes, since we did not make our decision about local vs center last Spring with full information. It is a kind of crappy situation the our base school has put families in, and really does a doozy on our trust in the principal. |
Contact the center school. Now and again first thing tomorrow morning. |
Which factors, OP? |
I seem to remember that the AAP response said that the decision could not be changed after it was made. I don't think you can argue that the LLIV program change and we don't like that. I am guessing that you will need to move next year. |
No, official policy is that the child can transfer from center to base school mid-year, as by right. But transfer to center school only happens at a new school year.
At 8/18 the logistic at center school is already set, the class divided and teachers assigned. Probably there is no space in the AAP class for an extra student anyway. |
In the first week of school, there is still some flexibility. Some centers may be completely full but ours could handle another student or two. The only way to know is to ask. And since OP is new to the district, she may get more accommodation than another parent. |
Two kids moved from a LL program to my DC's center school class at the end of the first semester last year. You might have to wait until January. |
OP, are you around? Interested to know what you did. |
