If you’ve flown on Play airlines, how was it?
Most of the midway connections are in Iceland. There seems to be no tv screens and bring your own food or buy it on board. I know it is a discount airline flying to Europe. I’ve flown JetBlue and Spirit before. I’m curious if it is truly that much less expensive once you pay for luggage than a flight on another airliner. |
We compared Play to Icelandic Air when four of us traveled to Iceland 2 years ago. We were only brining a carryon and personal item each (spinner and backpack), and by the time those fees were added to Play each way, Icelandic Air was less expensive. No regrets |
None of these fake airlines are good. They don't hire full-time ground personnel, understaff and underopen the check-in desk. You could get stranded even if you're on time and the flight is not cancelled. It's not worth the couple hundred bucks savings (because they will make you pay for every little "extra", coming close to regular airline pricing). |
It is cheap, but pretty awful. I would not do it again. Uncomfortable seats, not even water is served. My return flight was delayed a day due to mechanical problems. I would rather pay more and have a more comfortable flight. |
Ir wasn’t great, but it was the difference between affording Paris or driving to the beach |
It was fine for us. For the dates we were traveling and with 1 checked bag and 1 carry-on each, it was still $300 less than IcelandAir. I’d do it again. |
Op here. Thank you PPs for sharing your experiences.
Did you all feel like the savings of the few hundred was eaten up by luggage fees and food fees? I’m wondering if I check three bags and pay for 5 carryons if I’m spending the same as British Airways or Virgin. |
When we flew Play last year the class of ticket we purchased enabled me to select seats + have 1 carry on.
It was materially cheaper than other options. We went for 5 days and did not check luggage. If it was close to other airlines - book it. For my trip, it was $1K cheaper to fly Play. |
Just price it out yourself. I’m sure it’ll vary depending on your dates and destination. I had two screens open, added the exact same things to the carts (refundable ticket, baggage, etc.), compared everything, and booked the lower price. Food didn’t factor into the equation for me. I always bring my own when flying anyway. |
We’ve done two round trips with Play without issues. I worry about heading to Europe if delays happen because they don’t have a fleet here so I might not schedule anything vital in first 24 hours of flight arrival in case there is a delay. |
I put my daughter on it when she goes to Europe. It is pretty grim, but beggars can't be choosers. I would never fly it myself. |
I should show my son your comment so he knows how lucky he is that we always put him on United E+ and then upgrade him to a business class seat. |
Flew in May with my 2 daughters to Paris. Never again unless you upgrade seats. It was absolutely the tiniest seat I have ever seen. Didn't sleep at all. I don't think I could do it again even if significantly cheaper |
Ha we have flown business class on miles a couple of times TO Europe, but economy home- less important to have the lie flat seat on a flight you probably won't sleep on. What's funny is that both times the kids made a slightly snide comment after we walked past business class to our economy seats- something like "why aren't we sitting here? Why do we have to go to the back?" Definitely setting them up for disappointment when on their own, but those lie flat seats on overnight flights are too good. |
