AirTag notification

Anonymous
I got a notification from an AirTag after driving from NYC to Southern NJ. Thing is, I am not aware of any AirTags and there were not headphones or other devices that might track me in the car.

What is going on? How did I somehow pick up an AirTag signal?

Whose car are you in? There is an AirTag tracking with you.

Official info:

Use the map to check to see if it's following your car, or your bag, or your clothing, or what.

It’s my own car. I live alone.

Was it a one time notification or are you still being notified after your trip?

Dear OP- stalkers/criminals will do this to track a victim and attack at a later time. Find out where it is asap and report it to the police. Try not to bring it into your home. The less the person has on your whereabouts, the better.

This happened to me once too. I was on a road trip and driving a rental, and up popped a notification. Nothing was wrong!! I clicked on the notification to get more info and it came up blank. I think I just happened to be driving near someone who did have one.

This just happened to our family on vacation in Denver. Got a notification and were able to play a sound - AirTag under carpeted area under passenger seats on Hertz rental car. Couldn’t get anyone from hertz to answer for a full day. Got thru following day and made report over the phone. We destroyed the AirTag.

Why would you destroy it? That's so environmentally wasteful and kind of violent and disturbing. Why not just give it away and that person could reset it?

how is it a good method to stalk or attack anyone if your phone notifies you it's there?

The chances of this happening are really small. I'm sure it happens but that should not be your first assumption. This happened once when a relative grabbed one of my bags at the last minute to take something out of my house and neither of us realized there was a spare airtag inside. No big deal. Could something like that have happened?

NP. The whole reason Apple began notifying users that an unknown AirTag was traveling with them was because these things were happening. Don’t be so naive.

But the vast majority of air tags are NOT being used in malicious ways. They ping off nearby cell phones, so it's not a PERSONAL attack on you if you get a ping. It's good to be aware for general safety, but it's highly unlikely you have a stalker.
