Winter swim gear

Great summer swim season and first time with SDS winter swim. Got the gear catalog. What is best to buy and anything you recommend for winter swim?

Some T-Shirts, a suit, and maybe a sweatshirt?

Don’t over purchase team specific gear before you’ve even started as you don’t know if your kid will even enjoy winter swim or if you all will actually find that SDS is decent (don’t know anything about them but not great reviews on here)

I wouldn't buy anything, maybe a shirt.

Parka but just Speedo or whatever - not team branded.

In our climate, where the snow starts in October, parkas are a must. I used to buy knock off uggs, but they preferred to wear crocs through the snow. Otherwise just get the equipment recommended for the team. Unless specified, get short fins over long ones. The short fins imitate the natural kick tempo better. Have fun!!

+1 to the bolded. I wouldn't spring for a parka since it's not that cold here and you don't know if your kid will want to continue winter swim.

Disagree. My club swimmer definitely wears her parka

Great. For our family, it wasn't an expense we were willing to pay for the first year of club swim. After that year, when our kids were all in, we did get them.

On the parka point, my kid uses hers all the time and it also comes in handy for those early summer meets where it’s chilly in the am the water is still cold.

Team T shirt. A Sporti parka from SwimOutlet — cheaper and warm enough for this area. Fins, kick board and pull buoy (depending on age) as they will use these at practice.

Definitely a parka (doesn’t need to be team branded) and a Beanie hat. My kids live in those between warm pool air and car in the winter.

Don't do a team branded parka (if you get one.) My kid went through 3 club teams before he found one that was a good fit. Thankfully, we just bought a parka in a color he liked and it's lasted 6 years (all of HS (club, summer, and HS teams) and now college club swim.)

I bought a large Sporti parka when my kid was 9. She's worn it for 5 seasons now. It used to be really big, but will soon be too small. She wears it at meets mostly.
