Any way to accelerate math in HS

Anonymous
Kid will be taking Algebra 1 in 7th, Honor Geometry in 8th. Is there any way to accelerate math in HS to AP calculus BC in 10th?

I'm curious - what is the benefit of AP Calc BC in 10th?
This is pretty standard for kids who are already accelerated (place honors or AP in front of the class where appropriate):
7th - Alg 1
8th - Geometry
9th - Alg 2
10th - PreCalc
11th Calc
12th - ? Stat? or something else

Multivariable
Linear Algebra

(if offered)

But OP your kid can take a year of math over summer school if the school permits it. Ask their counselor.

Yes. Take honors Alg 2 in 9th and the honors precalc in summer school.

Is this a real possibility in MCPS? I looked and I didn't get an impression it was an option.

The benefit is that they can take MV Calculus/Linear Algebra and AP statistics while leaving space for more science and art classes. Basically, they can take one more class that interests them.

Not all schools have something after Calculus BC, so be careful with accelerating too much.

Just don’t. You think this is the ticket to a better college for your kid, but many schools shy away from these kids and go for more well-rounded candidates. They come off as burnt out and awkward at their admissions interviews. Unpopular opinion, but true.

If they have more math they are more well rounded and what makes you think smart kids aren't well rounded?

Remember that all students are require to take a math course each year they are in high school.

Talk with your child’s school counselor and the Math RT.

No, that’s a joke. Honors Precalc is one of the most challenging classes. You don’t want to skimp on it in SS if you want good success in AP BC Calculus.

Really OP - very few kids are taking Calc in 10th grade. There’s really no reason to. But your best chance at accelerating is to double up Geometry with Algebra 1 or 2, or take Geometry in SS.

I agree with previous posters that lots of kids that seem exceptional at math can first start to struggle in Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc. It is not wise to do either of those classes in an abbreviated fashion unless you have reason to believe your kid truly is a very unique outlier.

Summer school math is generally a bad idea. A better plan would be to just take Calc BC in 11th then double up on courses like AP Stat and MV etc in 12th since they can be done at the same time.
