I made the Molly Yeh/Sam Sifton NYT one last year and found it comforting but said next time I think I’ll use a red wine beef broth base/bouillon element for more depth of flavour.

I wouldn't say favorite, but here's a very classic hot dish recipe. (There's lots of things I love about my adopted state of Minnesota. Much of its culinary heritage, like hotdish and lutefisk, I find unappealing)

Yes! Bake tater tots with a thin layer of refried beans, one dark chocolate bar, and Mexican grated cheese and thinly sliced jalapeno peppers for 20 minutes or until bubbling. Top with dollop of sour cream or low-fat yogurt plain.

I live in the Midwest and we haven’t made dinner casseroles since the 80’s.

The occasional breakfast casserole for events, yes.

I can’t speak to the MN hotdish but I hope it’s alive and well.
