Brown social environment

Would love to hear from those of you who have a current or recent undergrad at Brown. How is the social scene? Was your student able to make friends pretty quickly? I know Brown does not have residential colleges, which can provide a built-in community. Are there other ways the school encourages community?

Super left wing woke SJW.

Residential colleges are overrated and for people who can't make friends. Brown settles you in well and has a very social environment. In many ways, it is like a Liberal arts college, and you find out about others drama really really quick. Great place, a ton of fun, and no reason to be nervous.

There is a reason it is called the fun IVY.

Curious about this too. Would like specifics. My spouse went there and had an underwhelming experience both academically and socially. But I would like our kid to look at it.

How would an introvert fare there?

My kid graduated in past 5 years. DC had a great academic and social experience, with friends from different interests (classes, clubs, sports) and added friends throughout college years.

I totally disagree with take above on residential college system - another DC attended a school with this system and it was just one more connection for making friends.

Residential colleges are only needed if you're a total loser. Just meet people. It's really not that hard and kinda embarrassing that schools have to force students to talk with one another. It shows a very crappy community that needs to compensate with tribalism.

Which top 20 colleges offer residential college systems and how do they vary?
As far as Brown, nephew is a junior there and enjoys it although he does go off campus to visit friends in Boston regularly. He was paired with a freshman year roommate from the same city and they've stayed together.

Two recent grads I know absolutely loved it. Sporty, club sports not varsity. It is the “happy Ivy” for a reason.

Keeney quad (multiple dorms) houses 80% of Freshmen and is a very, fun experience. Made great friends for life. They do a lot to integrate Freshmen.

Yeah. WTH with residential colleges? My large state university had Freshmen dorms and good 'ol regular dorms. The best year of my life was in that Freshmen dorm. Made friends for life. The practical jokes and bonding and craziness during final weeks. Late night fun. Made friends that I saw a lot in my major too. From what my Brown kid has told me, it sounds pretty much like my experience but smaller scale since we are talking 6-7,000 undergrads vs 40,000. She also had a 6-day orientation at Brown with small groups and they did a lot of fun things and got to know other students well. She has described a chill vibe. Going into Senior year and is rooming off campus with 3 girls from her Freshmen year dorm hall. You do live on campus the first 3 years which really makes for a lively campus. My son went to a school where everyone moved off campus after Freshmen year and I felt that was too soon. The kids were also spread far after that.

College, like high school, is ultimately going to be what you make of it.
