| DD made the JV team at her HS but is beside herself as other Rising Freshmen made Varsity (aka her friends). There appears to be no rhyme or reason why they made it and she didn't. Will she be able to work hard to move up this season? |
|
She’ll be fine.
She’s a freshman and will surely make varsity next year or one of the following two years. Maybe the varsity team needed an extra flyer and your DD was a base? Maybe they needed a spunky yeller and your daughter is more of a solid tumbler or Vice versa. Maybe you’re reading this saying “no but my DD and her bestie are basically the same with same skills and they made bestie varsity and made my DD JV “ and in that case maybe they just needed one of those and not two. Maybe they only wanted to take 3-4 freshmen so the number is balanced and they had to make the cut somewhere…. OP I know you’re sad for your DD bc disappointment is hard, but hipefullly you can guide her to accept and enjoy (and even be grateful for) the opportunity to do JV and possibly even get some leadership experience from it. |
| Move up this season? Probably not if there are only try outs once per year. |
| How is your DD’s tumbling compared to her friends? In our experience with cheer if the younger kids had high level tumbling they were likely to make Varsity. |
| OP. To be honest she doesn't have formal cheer experience but has always wanted to be a cheerleader. The friends of her that made Varsity have some gymnastics experience and are on the smaller side. To be honest I just don't know what criteria she was evaluated on. There has been no transparency with the parents. It's been a disappointing week. |
I’m sorry it’s been disappointing but maybe you can gently point out to her that this is a new sport for her so making JV was a great accomplishment. It sounds like her friends have more experience and in cheer, gymnastics are a huge plus. Focus on having fun and seeing if she likes cheer. If she does she can work this year on the next level of skills she will need to make Varsity in the future. |
She has no prior cheer experience and expected to waltz onto the varsity squad? C’mon now, she’s very lucky to have made JV. |
| Have a Google of Michael Jordan and Leroy Smith. Leroy Smith made the varsity team. Michael Jordan did not. |
This, this, this. Have her use it to reminder herself to work hard and have a great attitude all season. The coaches won't forget if she does - and they also won't forget if she mopes or doesn't push herself. |
| You have to be able to tumble to be on varsity. Simple fact |
Michael Jordan had a growth spurt. Without it, he'd be just as famous as Leroy Smith |
School dependent. Ours is desperate for anyone willing to cheer. Dance is much harder to make |
But he also used his time on JV to work hard. Without the grit and dedication he wouldn't be famous either. |
Most of his biographers say that he was always a worker and dedicated. He was just too short to make varsity as a freshman |
At our high school if you can’t tumble- you will never make varsity |
