Semi-formal wedding guest ideas?

Anonymous
I am really struggling with what to wear to my nephew's wedding in mid-September in Rhode Island, at a historic house wedding venue--evening wedding.

I have gained a lot of weight and feel gross--I am a size 18 or 20 and everything seems too matronly, or too sexy. There is no in- between. The wedding is semi-formal, and the bridesmaids are wearing various shades of blue so I am trying to avoid navy. I do have a black midi dress I wore to a wedding on Long Island in 2020, but it's kind of plain, last resort.

I have ordered a couple things online but none have fit correctly or looked right. I heard that Nordstrom etc doesn't really carry formal wear in the stores anymore. Is this true? I am in Alexandria so will go anywhere in NoVA.

I would wear the black midi -- buy a colorful/fun necklace. And remember -- no one is looking at you!

I bought a dress to wear to a wedding at Anthropologie. Maybe check them out online. Sounds like a fun night. I feel you on the being a much bigger size than I would like.

Agree, this sounds like a fine plan.

I love black but I find black pretty funeral and I rarely see it at weddings. Dark green is a better option

OP I'm sure your black dress is fine!

But if you want something new - how about a jumpsuit?

That’s cute. I’m 5’10 w/ a long torso so jumpsuits can be difficult. I’m also planning to wear one to the brunch the day after.

That’s a little too matronly for me.

No specific ideas but I would check ASOS and Lulu's. They generally have some dresses that fit larger sizes. Good luck op!

Do you have anything you can tell us about what styles you like, materials, colors, etc? Budget?

Any inspo photos you can share?

It'll be easier if you tell us a little more about what you're looking for!

I recently had great luck with a j. Crew dress that is no longer in stock but this is the same cut and fabric:

I am 5’9 size 20

The photo doesn’t do it justice

I’m the same size and have had similar struggles. Wear the black midi dress. Worrying about it isn’t worth it.
