Diswasher OCD?

Anonymous
I have to admit I am having issues using dishwashers. I wonder if anyone else does too.
I find them failing to clean the dishes unless I wipe the stains and leave no food residue at all. I don't think they use enough water, I hate long cycles and heated dry as it seems to bake in the stains and wastes so much. Anyone else has a habit of prewashing dishes by hand before putting into a dishwasher and then running an express type of cycle? I am spending so much time at the end of my day on kitchen tidying up after my family uses it and this whole doing dishes for everyone by hand is getting old.

It's not OCD, it's the dishwasher, sounds like, if food is actually staying on the dishes (other than plastics which can stain easily from tomato sauces and such).

If you have a decent dishwasher and set it on the highest settings - heavy clean, hot rinse, etc - you shouldn't need to prewash.
I do the prewash anyway, and it doesn't take that much time.

Does "pre-wash" mean using a sponge and running hot water to wipe everything off before putting things into the dish washer? Kids and husband don't, but I've always done that. Even now that we have two top of the line dish washers. It's just a habit I guess -- and I still have flashbacks of getting a fork with something baked on it! So gross!

Maybe you just need a new dishwasher.

This is a big waste of water/energy if you have a decent dishwasher.

I’ve always done that, OP, for all the dishwashers I’ve ever used. It’s normal. Dishwashing is my favorite chore because the running water is soothing. I hate all the others.

Never had any of those issues. I think you need a new dishwasher

I don't prewash anything. I will soak dishes with things I know won't come out in the dishwasher (dried on stuff) but that's maybe one or 2 things in a load. I hate washing dishes.

Is it more waste than running a hefty scrub cycle? OP here, this is what I do, I use a sponge to wipe off food residue, so that it doesn't remain on the dishes after the express cycle completes. Heavy cycles are 3x the time of express, I'd think it's more efficient and wastes less electricity/water if you do sponge handwash. Maybe I am wrong

Grease doesn't come off with soaking unless you have some detergent, I feel like it's hard for the dishwasher to clean the grease and even non greasy residue.

A repair tech told me that the more food left on the better. Modern DW detergents are meant to interact with the grease in order to get the surfactants activated, and that’s what gets the cleaning done correctly.

Get a better dishwasher.

How old is your dishwasher?

Don’t pre wash. Scrape your plate and put it in “dirty”. The detergent works with the food to clean the dishes.

I had to retrain myself because I was a washer. Now I have a bosh and don’t pre wash and my dishes come out super clean.

Also, wash your dish washer’s filter.

That is not ocd. You need a better dishwasher.
