Any recent quotes from movers?

Hi DCUM! I just got a quote for moving a small 3-BR house - almost all furniture very few boxes - from Silver Spring to Southern Anne Arundel County for $2200. It needs to be next week so I don’t have a lot of time to get a whole bunch of quotes - can anyone reassure me that that’s reasonable? Or not? Thanks!

I paid almost $3000 to move a 3 bedroom house from Silver Spring to Rockville in May. Lots of boxes, very little furniture.

I paid about $1500 to move a one bed across NW DC. There were long walks & stairs on either end along with some unexpected furniture disassembly.

How much is the bed? You can buy a new one and have it delivered and assembled for this price if you don't insist on brand names.

I don't know what is reasonable, but for a smaller apartment I got the best quote from these guys:

No recent quotes, just be careful though.

When I was moving from NY to DC, the movers quoted me one quote before the job started (I lived in a small 1bedroom apt) and it was only AFTER all of my things were loaded into the truck that the guy tried to scam me and said it would be $4,000 MORE than the quote and basically implied that he'd hold my things hostage if I didn't pay it.

Mind you, my (now) husband, then boyfriend already had a fully furnished 2br apt, so I wasn't bringing the majority of my furniture with me -- just my king size bed, a couch, a few tv's and wardrobe boxes with my clothing.

My husband who is 6'5, 240lbs said to him "how about I take a razor blade and I flatten all 6 of your tires? Then you guys will have to stay here with me... sound good?

They went with the original quote.

Beware of this tactic.
Write on your contract that you will only be paying the price that they quoted you prior to the move.

That sounds steep to me. Is this a flat rate quote or are they billing you hourly with a minimum charge?

I would reach out to friends/family/list serv if you can for recent referrals. Getting good movers is more important than getting the cheapest and the challenge is that if you move infrequently, the companies change in the interim.
