Math Olympiad level for high school student

Anonymous
DC will be a sophomore this year. DC did not do the Math Olympiad last year and is planning for this year. To get into the MAth Olympiad DC has to be in their school's math club and for that DC has to go through a selection round. What level of MO high school takes the test? If DC does not get into the Math Club, is there any other way DC can appear in these contests outside school?

What is the "Math Olympiad"? There are many events with similar name.

I don't know much. Please enlighten me. I thought Math olympiad contests were like the MOEMs one. I am not very much into researching about getting into top-tier schools. DC gives me information.

Are you in FCPS?

Yes.

If the school isn't TJ, everyone who applies will be selected for the club. Most people who are interested in such a math contest club attend TJ.

Best to get as much info from DC as you can, and post it here, so people can fill in more related details.

OP here. Last year Dc did not qualify into science Olympiad club. I am assuming for Math club too they have qualifying round. Nevertheless, what resources are there to do some practice. I have no idea about high school math contests.

Science Olympiad is totally different -- it's a team quiz bowl event. There is no math event like that.

The main high school math competition is the AMC and AMC 12, which are administered at school and don't have any tryouts or selection.
