Four years ago, my mom gifted us her 1994 Volvo 940 sedan, which she had taken immaculate care of for years. My teenage son used it occasionally for about a year, and then my teenage daughter really made good use of it from 2023-2024 to commute between home/school/work. She treated it with loving care and was sad to give it up. I always felt good knowing she was driving a "tank," despite it being an older vehicle. The car has been in no accidents, has virtually no external marks (despite being white) and just has minor interior wear & tear. From a mechanical perspective, it has 125K miles on it; got new tires in Dec. 2022; and recently got new rear brake pads/rotors and two new alternators & A/C belts. The original timing belt is still intact. The seats are incredibly comfortable.
Part of me would love to find another local family/teen that needs a short-term starter vehicle, but I'm wondering if it's not of interest due to its age and potential for future mechanical problems. I otherwise might consider donating it to one of FCPS' academies. Any thoughts? |
If you're willing to post on Craigslist and sort thru the riff raff you'll find people who are really into old volvos and will appreciate it and keep using it. Sounds like it's in great shape. 125 is nothing for those cars
Thanks for the suggestion.

There is a market for older Volvos. You'll be to sell it, if you want. Isn't it still the boxy version? Not quite vintage but pre-modern?
Yes, kind of boxy. It looks like this one: https://www.kbb.com/volvo/940/1994/turbo-sedan-4d/
Why do you want to get rid of it? Just keep it.
It's tempting to keep, but I already have a newer & more fuel-efficient car. I'm now an empty nester & trying to downsize for a potential future move. So it just feels like the right time to pass it along to someone who will get good use out of it and hopefully take good care of it.
If it is truly beloved and you want someone who will take good care of it, I would try to sell it to an enthusiast, not some random teen in need of a starter vehicle who doesn't appreciate the uniqueness of a 90s Volvo. There are auction sites that specialize in vintage cars in good condition. |
Got it. Will look into these options. Thanks all!
This makes me miss my old 1991 740 Turbo wagon immensely. Was my first car my parents let me drive when I turned 16. I had no interest then with driving the family station wagon but soon learned to love the car and as I look back wow was I lucky to drive such a great machine. It finally died on me after 350k miles and it owed us nothing. In hindsight I wish I had kept it and kept it up, but I didn’t have the wherewithal then.
Get on the Volvo Reddit or forums….you will find someone who wants to pay top dollar for it. You’d be surprised at what this will sell for to someone who collects these vehicles.
