I have a MS and HS student and neither school, nor the county, has said a word about what the new policy will be. Has anyone heard anything? |
They haven’t said anything much yet because the policy just came into place and they are also waiting for specific guidance from VDOE. The executive order from Youngkin specifies that districts’ new policies must be in place by January.
Teachers aren’t even back for another week. |
Shame that they aren’t starting after Labor Day. |
Our middle school just mentioned in passing in a recent summer newsletter that the cell phone rule is the same as last year, cell phones have to be kept in lockers during the school day and turned off. They can be used on the school bus.
I’m wondering what they will do about things like field trips. Last year there was an all-grade field trip to a pretty far venue that did not accept cash and kids were encouraged to use apple pay (i.e. with phones). Will these days now be cell-phone free too? |
I'm guessing they aren't going to do anything about smart watches. We'll see. |
Why is that a shame? |
Smartwatches are included in the wording of the policy. |
I know. I’m predicting no change at our school though. Principal was asked on a virtual parent meet and he said same as last year (phones in lockers.) He didn’t elaborate. He has enough problems without fighting kids and parents about Apple Watches. This is an LCPS MS. |
This is going to be such a disaster. It's a rule from a bunch of out of touch adults who don't know how much kids actually rely on cell phones for stuff like this. |
You guys realize you can send a credit card with kids. You can’t be suggesting we don’t try to limit phone use in schools, which is catastrophic to their learning and general well being, because sometimes a field trip might not take cash. |
Catastrophic? Please get a handle on your anxiety. |
I’m a teacher. I am not exaggerating how bad phones are for their ability to learn. |
APS: Our MS will allow cellphones only in silent mode in the classroom (lockers are shared), and smart watches taken away during testing.
Ducking disaster in the making. |
good!! about time they do something abotu cell phones |
*Certain* kids' ability to learn, which, let's face it, are the same kids who weren't learning much anyway. My kids have phones and watches at school and use them responsibly (Yes, I check and have limits on the phones) and have straight A's in honors classes and get selected for honors and awards. Why should they be punished? |
