Although speed bumps are more effective than traffic cameras, the DC government prefers traffic cameras because they are money-grabbing.
With speed bumps, the driver must slow down; otherwise, his/her car will suffer damage. Drivers from Maryland or Virginia don’t care about traffic cameras because they ignore the tickets, and nothing happens, but with speed bumps and cushions, if speeding, they will suffer car damage. "In terms of the percentage accident reduction, however, engineering schemes incorporating vertical deflections (such as speed humps or cushions) offer the largest benefits: at 44%, the average reduction in personal injury accidents attributable to such schemes, is twice that at sites where safety cameras were used to control speeds (22%) and they were the only type of scheme to have a significant impact on fatal and serious accidents." https://www.researchgate.net/publication/7854...emes_on_30_mph_roads In DC, the use of speed cameras is not about safety, but the money they generate. |
| You can't put speed humps on highways and major roads, hence why traffic cameras are needed. |
| DC has added quite a few speed bumps in Brookland. |
There are highway speed bumps that can be used in major roads: "Highway speed bumps can also be used on other roads and city streets where pedestrians and vehicles interact more . . . Traffic data by the Federal Highway Administration shows that speed bumps and rumble-strip significantly reduce collisions between vehicles and pedestrians." https://www.sinoconcept.co.uk/purchasing-guides/everything-about-speed-bumps/list-speed-bump-types/types-of-speed-bumps/ |
Good! Better than speed cameras, because the drivers must slow down with speed bumps, which is not the case with speed cameras which are not about safety but the money. |
|
Even better than speed bumps are continuous sidewalks. It slows the cars down where it matters the most, at an intersection, not mid block. Not to mention making walkers more visible and making it easier on people with strollers or disabilities.
Mandatory propaganda: |
|
DDOT has stated many times that they cannot afford to install as many traffic (speed) cameras as warranted/needed; most recently as part of the discussions re South Dakota Ave and Taylor Street NE.
However, DDOT has installed many, many speed bumps/tables/etc. |
Another great solution that is not about the money. |
|
I know! Let's have speed humps AND automated enforcement AND continuous sidewalks (AND bike lanes)!
Oddly enough, however, people who oppose automated enforcement often also oppose speed humps and continuous sidewalks (and bike lanes). |
| We love in Cleveland Park and need more speed bumps, please!!!! |
This has to be fiction. From the linked article, the top 10 cameras totaled $27.7 million in fines during the first 6 months of this year! https://www.axios.com/local/washington-dc/2024/08/01/speed-traffic-camera-tickets-potomac-river-freeway |

Yes! We would love more speed bumps and raised continuous sidewalks in our neighborhood where drivers cut through to larger streets. Add them to the speed and stop sign cameras. Great idea!
|
With speed bumps you don't need speed cameras. |
They can remove the speed camera when the speed bumps get built. |
| I usually don't agree with the Biker Bros, but this is definitely true. Speed bumps will damage your car if you go too fast and they are more effective at preventing reckless driving. |
