Tldr- for a just turned 3yo who is over strollers, hasn’t been in a carrier since 1, and has never used a leash, how would you get him through the airport
Im traveling alone with my 3,5 and 6yos. I’m debating how to best get the 3yo through the airport - mainly for keeping him close and out of people’s way. Usually with 2 adults we bring a stroller and what ends up happening is the 3yo wants out and an adult holds his hand or carries him and the 5yo wants in the stroller or everyone just wants their backpacks in it and we hang the 3yos car seat on the back. That won’t work well on my own bc I can’t push the stroller while also holding the 3yos hand when he wants to walk. And if the stroller is there, the 5yo gets so whiny about wanting I just bc he knows there is an alternative to walking What would you try? |
| Everyone walks. The 3year old gets carried a little. You check everything except one back pack for you. Go very early. |

Leash. Safety is top priority, and you can’t let him walk with two other kids and all your stuff in the airport.
|
| You can get one of those scooter carryons for the 5 year old. |
|
Can you buy a step for the stroller, so that one kid sits and the other stands on the step? Doesn't matter which.
A leash backpack is also good. |
|
If you don't need the stroller at the other end of the trip, then I would ditch it.
A 3 year old should be able to walk long enough to get to the gate in an airport. |
Never have I ever seen a 3 year old on a leash. Also, buying a new stroller for a 3 & 5 year old? lol. Who are you people? |
I would try bringing another adult on the trip. Or skipping this trip. |

Everyone walks and you arrive early enough to ho the pace you need. Study the airport terminal design a little to figure out what's the best path to take.
I had to do this with my twins when they were 3. I used a back pack carry on so my hands were free and I bribed them with little candies. |
Oops see that you also have a 6 yo. I think they will walk with you without needing to be held by the hand, dependant on the kid of course |

Everyone has to walk. Check everything except a backpack for each person. I don’t think you can manage any contraptions that require the use of your hands. The six year old is going to have to help you.
If it’s really, really far maybe you could request one of those little golf carts? Your airline has a phone number for accessibility questions - they are terrific in my experience and will tell you if/how they can help. |
| 5 and 6 yr olds have to hold hands and stay together (and close to you). You manage the 3 yr old. Everyone walks and carries an appropriate back pack for their needs/size. Giving the 3 yr old his own items to carry and be responsible for will actually help. |
| I have travelled with those ages. Everyone walks. bc of the same issue (whiny older kid), I stopped used strollers when the younger one was around 1.5 years. |
This is what I’m leaning towards but how did you manage 3yo when your hands had to be full (eg before you got your luggage checked in, when you were focused on getting it off the belt, when you were providing cards etc to a rental car person). It’s those moments in particular where I feel like I need a way way to force him to stay put. They’re all boys and the 3 and 5 yo are particularly high energy, silly, and wind each other up |

I got a ride on suitcase secondhand my now 4 year old loves. She’s getting too big for it but loves to scoot through the airport. I put toys and snacks in it. You got this!
