McLean Bible Church = guns, guns, guns

Apparently a PAC started at the church and funded by church elders is raising millions of dollars to strike down gun control laws. Fascinating.

Am I reading the article wrong or did it say the pastor who started it left the church and renamed it and changed the mission? And that new directors joined and replaced the church elders that were in the PAC? And then talked about McLean money being weirdly spent but not in regards to the PAC?

If you read the actual article, it makes clear that the guy who was involved in this has nothing to do with MBC now.

I also don’t agree with the opening paragraph. I am a member at MBC and attend church there every Sunday. It is most definitely apolitical, especially under David Platt. I would describe it as a purple church where a wide range of political views are held.

Seems there is always drama in MBC

Seems there is a MAGA contingent trying to fight the people trying to lead through Jesus's word.

This article is from 2021. Is there an updated one to show current drama or current MAGA efforts?

Not a sermon, just a thought.

Sounds woke.

I’m the person who posted at 12:02 yesterday.

I am actually a member of the church and attend it every Sunday. I had never attended a church like this before last year and started going back to church, at least in part, because I am seeking something deeper than just the typical left/right political tribalism that you see everywhere else in life. I am not a MAGA person (I both voted for and donated money to Biden), nor is anyone else I know who attends my small group or other activities I am involved with at MBC.

The original followers of Jesus were a very diverse group — fishermen, a tax collector, a prostitute. Some were pious and some weren’t so pious. That was done intentionally by God to bring together people from different walks of life in what would become the new covenant.

Similarly, I have found a true melting pot at MBC — there are people there all over the map politically but also geographically, across all races, nationalities, and backgrounds, and, also, importantly, socioeconomic status. In the DMV especially, we become cloistered in our groups — the well-off mostly hang out with other well-off people. I have learned a lot by getting to truly know people from different socioeconomic backgrounds and have a much greater appreciation for what they are struggling with every day. Likewise, while my employer talks about DEI all the time, and I have no problem with that at all and think it is on the whole a good thing, MBC is much more diverse than where I work. Two of the main pastors are black and I would estimate that at least 1/3 of the people in attendance every Sunday are people of color.

MBC isn’t every one’s cup of tea, for sure. I never in a million years thought I would be going to a church like this. I grew up in a high church tradition and then became a snobby agnostic/atheist for a long time after that. But I have seen something special there and found an unlikely home.

Nice. I find the people there a little overly devoted to religion in that it kind of consumes their life in an evangelical way but feel the same way about the diversity.

Who are these people that go to these massive churches? What are they getting out of it?

How are we supposed to know who people are and what they get out of it? Why don’t you attend a service and observe the situation and ask the people there? We can’t answer for others.

Congress should tax the hell out of MBC and other churches.

I'm not sure how closely linked they are (I think MBC gives them space, and it may have been started by MBC members), but Jill's House does great work. It's possible to donate to Jill's House directly:
