Help with tele therapy and out of state trip

Anonymous
We have a therapy appt and I don’t want to cancel it. Therapist can do virtual but I heard if you are not in certain states, they can’t do virtual. Do I just not say where we are? How would they know? I love therapist so don’t want to get in trouble but I also don’t want to cancel as our schedule just changed.

use a vpn with a mirror to the state you need to be in. don't say where you are.

Ask for a phone call instead of computer

I’m a therapist and I am required to ask where my clients are. You can lie I suppose. Therapist can’t. Therapist has to record where the session took place for insurance.

As a therapist, I only know where people are because I ask “are you at home”.

Don’t lie. If you are not in a state where the therapist is licensed, you have to skip the appointment. I’m sure you expect your therapist to be ethical - give them the same consideration. If your kid can’t go a week without missing therapy, then don’t go.

Completely agree. You are putting your therapist in a bad position.

I have had a therapy consultation where a family emergency (for which i needed therapy) arose and I was out of state. My provider stated that they would mark it as a "telephone consultation" and not a therapy session - or something?

Honesty is the best policy esp w our trusted providers!

My kid’s therapist takes care of it for us. I know that CA is not permitted but WA is. Not sure exactly what she does to figure it out. My impression is that she needs “permission”

If you lie to your therapist and put them in jeopardy, why would they keep you as a patient? I mean doing this would put your ability to continue with a therapist that you love and work well with in jeopardy.

I'm a therapist and if I found out you lied to me and risked my license and insurance paneling I would drop you as a client. Please don't do that to your child who has probably built up a relationship with this person.

Be truthful with your therapist! This is a licensing issue that can get your therapist into serious trouble.
