Swim lessons for 13-YO who just loves the water

Anonymous
Hi, My DD never joined a swim team, but she looooves swimming. She needs more structure/activities, so I'd love to get her a private swim coach/teacher. She's not in it for competition. I don't think she'd ever join a swim team (she's way behind kids her age, obviously). She knows how to swim, a little bit about strokes, etc., but she wants to learn more. Any ideas? We live near the new McMillan pool, if that helps. Thank you!

Remember that "teams" come in many manifestations. There are stroke training programs at many of the clubs that would likely be right for your DD. Not saying that private lessons would be useless (they are obviously great with the right teacher), but once she's swimming laps you'll probably want her to have some company, some goals, and some endurance challenges.

There are also many training groups at swim clubs that don't require meet participation at all. Your DD could swim for years without ever being explicitly required to race. Once she's comfortable with laps and strokes, though, consider summer swim. It's a great way for her to find _her_ happy place with the sport and see how much more she wants.
