HS courses - Debate and Speech communications

Do you have a high school kid taking these two courses? How did they like them?

“The debate course is designed to develop students’ creative and critical thinking, research, speaking, listening, and argumentation skills. Students engage in mock trials, Model Congress, and Policy Debate.”

“Speech communication is designed to introduce students to the basics of speech communication. Students participate in a variety of speech activities which help them develop self-confidence and poise through preparation, performance and evaluation. Students participate in interpersonal, group, and public speaking activities.”

Schools that offer one or both of these courses: Oakton, Westfield, Fairfax, Chantilly, Edison, McLean, Langley

I am surprised that Speech is not a required course as it was for me.
