DH is a campaholic...but we always go to the same places in VA. I want to go north for a change...any recommendations for a nice place to camp with the family? Can be in the woods, mountains, beach, lake.

Sorry, I don't have any ideas in response to your question. But I was hoping that you might share your favorite spots to camp in VA. We recently moved here from the west coast and love camping. We're looking for tent camping places that don't feel like you're pitching your tent right on top of other campers. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

There are some great places in the Adirondacks. Fulton Co. NY has some good camp sights around the Sacandaga Lake.

I know this isn't really "north", but I totally recommend Assateague Island in Maryland if you haven't done that already.

We went last year, and it was alot of fun. The ponies come right into the campsites, and you're camping right on the beach, which is just beautiful. And, the facilities are good.

Ewwwwww... watch out for ticks!!!!! We had a bad experience there and we just visited for a couple hours to picnic. My BIL got three ticks and my two sisters each got one. I think they are especially bad there because of all the ponies. That's my experience there at least.

Sorry to hear that, ugh. Maybe we were lucky. We camped there for 3 days, and didn't have any problems with ticks. (thankfully!) I'll definitely keep an eye out for them the next time.

We've enjoyed Greenbrier just north of Frederick, MD off of I-70. Appalachain Trail runs right through the park. It's not too far away from the metro area but also not close enough to get any freeway noise that you sometimes get at closer in places (like Little Bennett Campground, which is nice, but too close to I-270). Would love to hear other suggestions.

I am usually the one who suggests that area, since that's where I am from.

We really like Point Lookout State Park in Maryland. It's where the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay meet. It's great because you can get either a site back in the woods or right on the water. They have bath houses with running water which is my preference.

If you really like someplace remote Sleepy Creek in WV fits the bill. We grew up camping there all the time. Lots of hiking and there's a beautiful lake. If you have a canoe, they're allowed. No running water, but they do have outhouses.

Cunningham Falls in Maryland just north of Frederick is nice and there is a lake as well as nice hiking. The campgrounds are clean and serviced by bath houses with running water.

Are there places without ticks (serious question)? I always thought this was one of the perils of camping.

How far is this from NoVA or DC? Do you need advance reservations or can you just show up and on a first come first serve basis. Thanks.
