Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| I have been searching online for this but can't come up with a straight answer. Can I get highlights in my hair if I am 8 weeks pregnant? I have a wedding this weekend to attend and really need a touch-up, not seeing my Dr. until next week and forgot to ask at last appointment. Anybody know? |
| I think most people would say no. I waited until the 3rd trimester to get my highlights done, and know lots of people who wouldn't have done it even then. There is no clear research on whether the chemicals (which can enter your bloodtream through your scalp) are safe for baby, so I'd wait until the major developmental stages are safely through. |
| Search this board...we had a discussion about it just a month or so ago. Most of us agreed it is fine (and had our doctor's approval). My OB said there is no research that suggests any harm. Just make sure you are in a well-ventilated space. The dyes they used to use 20 years ago were terrible but they are much safer now. Of course, if you are really concerned you could wait until your second trimester. |
| chemicals entering ur blood throug ur scalp??? what's ur stylist using to apply the products? an ax!?!?! lol |

I'm not sure I've read anything that supports the idea that highlights enter your blood through your scalp. ??? I would just do it. In fact, I have. Throughout my pregnancies.

| Hair dye chemicals have been found in urine - so yeah, absorbed through skin. Think nicotine patch if this is incomprehensible to you, PP. |
| Simply Bliss salon in NW DC uses organic, ammonia free color. There might be a few other places as well in the DC area that do this. I had highlights done before my wedding in May (5 mo. pregnant) at Simply Bliss and they were fantastic. |
| While I tried to wait until I was done with the first trimester, I think hightlights are fairly safe. The chemicals do not actually sit on your scalp, just on your hair. Single process where you actually dye your hair sits on your scalp and that seems worse. Alto, all of this is based on your personal preference. I would think that most OBs would say highlights are fine. |
oh shut up! for chemicals to be absorbed through the skin they have to be in a specific combination. water doesn't pass through the skin mrs knowitall... |

I waited until 14 weeks. Decided I could put vanity aside until organ development was complete - erring on side of caution. It's a personal choice, like drinking Diet Coke. Probably nothing wrong with it, but some people are more cautious than others.
If it makes you feel better, most people don't notice your hair needing a touch-up like you do. |
| My doctor also said hightlights were fine and I did it through 3 pregancies. I even think with this last one, I did it at about 8-9 weeks because I still wasn't sharing that I was pregnant but remember wanting to tell my stylist because she was pregant as well. |
| I got the natural henna from Whole Foods and had my hairdresser use that. You need to be careful though with henna-some of the henna had some toxic chemicals but Whole foods carries a few that do not. However, if you have long or thick hair, I'd recommend getting a couple of bottles. it doesn't work as well as regular hair dye but at least I could cover my gray and not worry about all the chemicals. |

I think some people say "highlight" when they really mean "dye." The PP's talking about dye sitting on your scalp and soaking into your blood stream may be thinking about a dye-job. When you get highlights, the dye doesn't generally touch your scalp.
My only concern with highlighting, and the only reason I did not get it done while I was pregnant, was the fumes. That said, you're probably exposed to them just getting your hair cut, since others are getting dyes and highlights and nails, etc. I think if you can get a seat near the entrance, and away from any manicurist, it's probably fine to get the highlights. |
New poster here - I went studied cosmetology in my previous life. What the PP poster said is true - color can pass through your skin. In 2001, the color instructors (salon professionals who focus on coloring hair) taught us that pregnant women should refrain from getting color treatments - especially, but not limited to, color on scalp (this is color or bleach directly applied to your scalp). Highlights shouldn't touch your scalp, but sometimes colors run, as does bleach. So, if you're getting a 2-process (bleach in foils, then toner to adjust color), I would be concerned about the toner. But again - this was almost 10 years ago. Plus, Gwen Stefani bleached the crap out of her roots while she was pregnant, and I am positive it was applied to her scalp - not through foils - and her boys seem great! Ask your doctor if you're unsure. (Don't ask your hair stylist.) |

cosmetology? lol I would trust research not he said/she said.
