Frustrated with wait lists at the library

Anonymous
I have been on 2 wait lists at MoCo library for a long time. I had just started a book when I got the email that it was my turn for the first one. I was excited so I picked up the book. Then get the next email. So now I have three books I'm trying to read before they need to be returned. On the Libby, I can choose to pass over my turn and wait for the next copy. Why isn't this an option for physical copies? Skip me, and come back to me! It takes me a week to read a book!

Do you have an option to freeze books on your hold list? I do this with my MCPL list all the time.

+1.

Does your library still charge overdue fees? Mine doesn't, so now I just keep a book until I'm finished with it. I will say that I am never late by more than a week or so in returning them.

you can track where you are in the line and then suspend a hold so it doesn't come at an inconvenient time. (like if you're on vacation or something). Also, hold pick up in Montgomery county is ten days to pick up so that buys you a bunch of time, too.

As far as I can tell, Mont Co doesn't have an app, but you do it from the website. Easy enough to log in from a browser, even on the phone.

Good idea. I see that option. Thank you!

Also, no we don't have overdue fees, but I wish I didn't have a book sitting on my shelf for a few weeks when there is a long waitlist. The book I picked up was 700+ pages so it's going to be very late.

Someone else could have read that book in that week. Use the freeze option.

mcpl used to have the Bookmyne app, which was great, but it kept crashing.

Just buy an e-reader and use libgen. You're on the internet after all.

I don't understand the problem you are having but buy the book cheap on ebay.

If you live in MoCo, get your DC library card. Place holds there too. They typically have a better holds to copies ratio.

+1 I do the same thing with Fairfax & Loudoun. The systems all provide reciprocal access now.

I have a DC card, it's not very convenient to go to, I got it for the Libby app, which I don't use anymore, I prefer the physical book now.

Online said the book my book club reading is available at my nearby library as Lucky Day. I went to get it - not on shelf. Librarian said book not seen for 2 months.

MoCo library availability on Libby is terrible. Especially for children's books. I don't where our tax dollars are going but it's not to purchase books. I had the DC library card it was much better for online books.

My parents are part of one of a New York county library system, and they have so many more books than MoCo.
