Is it me or is google teaching us that people of color can’t write on their own?
Quite the perpetuation of stereotypes! And during the Olympics, when so many kids are watching! I’m so insulted! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NgtHJKn0Mck&pp=ygUlR29vZ2xlIGFpLiBMZXR0ZXIgY29tbWVyY2lhbCBvbHltcGljcw%3D%3D |
| I assume the link leads to the commercial with AI writing the fan letter? That one makes my blood boil! Oh, yes, we're all about hard work and perseverance on the track field but can't bother to write our own fan letter? Wtf!? |
| you seem mad that the story isn't about a white kid |
| Yeah that one set a terrible example. Does no one review these things? Ick! |
Because there aren't any white runners? What if they put a multiracial kid? Could that solve all our problems? |
|
My mind went there.
It's a terrible ad. What athlete wants an AI written fan letter from a little kid? This is an example of AI taking things that are beautiful and turning them into something soulless. And while I'd usually see an add that featured a young black athlete looking up to an older black athlete, because I think representation matters, featuring a black family in a commercial that makes them look like idiots, and reinforces stereotypes, is not the kind of representation anyone wants to see. |
| I mean ... people are on here all the time suggesting DCUM kids use AI to write their college essays. This is just a thing now for just about anyone writing anything. |
|
I agree that it's disgusting to suggest that a kid take their enthusiasm and channel it into AI so an athlete can get a generic fan letter. Kids' original thinking--and even spelling--are what make their letters so good! And why is the dad doing it for her? If she's going to use AI, she should at least be the one doing it.
Nothing to do with racism, IMO--this ad just sucks and I hope no one seeing it thinks that using AI this way is a good idea. |
| I keep thinking it’s the dad’s job to teach her how to write a letter. People need to learn these skills for years before they get AI assistance. |
+1. I remember being a 7 year old writing a fan letter to my favorite football player, working hard to express my thoughts. And I've always taught my kids the importance of handwriting thank you notes for gifts received, or to express gratitude for something someone's done for them. It's disappointing to see this commercial broadcast to families with the message of let AI do your kid's thinking for them. |

| I mean it's stupid on several levels. But it's not racist. Get a life. |
| Yeah, not a good look, Google, but honestly it wasn't even the black man saying "I'm good with words, but..." that got me, it's that nobody wants to RECEIVE a fan letter written with AI!! Let the girl write her own heartfelt letter. |
