I don't think Trump really has any options here. Is it even possible to fabricate an excuse that doesn't come across as weak? His numbers are actively tanking with this millstone around his neck. He needs to get rid of Vance as soon as possible and try to recover. But any kind of health emergency is going to look suspect, as Vance is so young. Would he make up something about Vance's pressing family matters, or go with the tried and true "moving on to bigger and better things, and we wish him well?" What's bigger and better than VP? I don't see how it's possible to navigate this at this point, but ballots start getting printed on August 7. It's got to be now or never. |

There is a whole 40 something page thread on this.

There is no credible republican who wants to be Trump's running mate now that Harris has momentum. More would have lined up to run against Biden if Trump was not on the ticket. But being attached to Trump and Project 2025 when Harris is rising, feels like a losing proposition. They also know Trump will only pick someone who will rubberstamp everything he says/does. He wants to be a dictator on day one. Only Vance wanted to sign up for that.
Even if he found someone okay-ish who would cosign Trump on everything, there's not enough time to vet anyone properly. And the VP will miss the best commercial for VP - the RNC convention. Meanwhile Dems get to have their big commercial in Chicago in 3 weeks for their convention. |
|
OP here. And what excuse wouldn't then backfire on them, given all the criticism being thrown at Biden and Harris? At least they hadn't had the convention yet, but Trum and Vance would have actual responsibilities to discharge. Parties get to decide who to nominate in their own fashion, but after that, it is much more rote.
What's even possible for him to do? |
Thanks, and Jeff may indeed decide to lock this. I'm not speculating on whether he WILL drop Vance, but whether he even CAN do it. That might not be distinct enough to form another thread, though. Appreciate the link, and we'll see how this goes. |
What are the constraints on what he can do, once the nominations are already made? Obviously, people have to be able to bow out, but what's the process? |
He can do anything he wants. Especially before the ballots are printed. It's difficult to do it without coming off as someone with bad judgment/having made a mistake. So the way to go about it would be to have JD bow out, citing 'personal problems', which no one is going to buy of course. |
| When has Trump ever hesitated to do something he wasn't supposed to or 'couldn't' do? Laws and rules don't apply to King Donald. |
He could say "I'm dropping out to spend more time with my family" 😄 |
He will look like a fool and would get HAMMERED on his poor judgment. No way he risks being a laughingstock. More than he already is, I mean. |
Yet when we all think it can't get any more embarrassing, he proves us all wrong again and again. |
Or his couch. But realistically, Vance has no incentive to drop out. His whole life has been about manufacturing his political career and dropping out would tank it. Trump is stuck with his weird Project 2025 guy. |
Once the ballots are printed, is there anything stopping Trump from insisting that they be reprinted correctly with the new team, if he does drop Vance? Can he force it to happen, or cajole that to happen if he finds a third party donor to pay for it? Is there any legal concern about voting on a ballot with the wrong name? Do you have to write in the new name for it to be protected from any challenges, or something? |
People have talked about mis print of ballots, wrong names on ballots especially in key states. Crucial for volunteers and local election workers to review, recheck especially this year. Volunteer if you can. |
