What to do with 6 free hours on Tuesday?

Anonymous
I need to be out of the house on Tuesday from approximately 8:00am to 2:00pm to avoid some work being done on our house. I've been pretty tied to the house as a caregiver the last couple years and my mind can't quite wrap itself around this big chunk of time all to myself on a random Tuesday.

Ideas on what to do? (I'll be by myself.) I enjoy being outside but not really hiking, plus it's going to be hot out. Maybe one of the local museums that has a garden? Anything new going on in DC? I haven't checked the Post's weekend section in ages. I live in Northern Virginia, but am happy to go into DC or nearby Maryland.

If museum plus garden sounds good, you could do the National Gallery plus the sculpture garden. There's lots of shade in the middle and the fountain helps cool things off. It's also walkable from there to the Portrait Gallery plus lots of places in Penn Quarter to grab food.

Get a massage and mani pedi. Treat yourself to a nice lunch. You can do all in Georgetown.

Go for swim, followed by a movie.

Given traffic patterns you won't have as much time as you think. You will want to leave at least an hour to get back home at that time of the day. Maybe take a walk through Old Town Alexandria?

I would take a long walk through one of the battlefield trails out in Prince William in the morning, because they're pretty shaded. Then I'd either go to the spa or a movie, with the theater popcorn for my lunch.

My second option would be to drive out somewhere like Middleburg to browse through stores and just walk around. Maybe find some fruit stand or farm with great produce.

OP here -- Thanks for the great ideas!

Perhaps enjoy a peaceful lunch at a restaurant that serves the type of food you usually enjoy.
I love 🍝 🍕 so I would love a great Italian restaurant!

Then sit in a nice, air-conditioned movie theater & immerse yourself in a great movie.

Afterward, do some shopping for some new clothing, get your hair done, a mani/pedi or even a gentle tissue massage.

In other words - make it a day all about you!
Have fun!
Your mental health will thank you!

You should use the time to fight climate change.

Scott’s run? It’s short but shady and you still get some sense of nature time, and a weekday will not be too crowded. Then go get lunch and a mani/pedi.

It’s worth walking across the mall to the little garden west of the Hirschhorn. They do such a nice job with it.
