dry eyes - what am I doing wrong?

Anonymous
I have tried all types of eye drops. I put one in and it feels great for a few moments. But after a few normal blinks, the drop just runs right out and I feel dry once again. It is almost as if my eyes aren't accepting the drops ... like when you water a plant with extremely dry, hard soil and the water just pools on top. Any suggestions?

close your eyes for a 2 full minutes and close the two ducts by the tops of your nose with CLEAN fingers to keep them in.

See an ophthalmologist. That’s my suggestion.

When you say all types do you mean OTC? Those will not actually treat dry eye and in fact make it worse, the way Afrin will have a rebound effect on your sinuses if you use it too often. If you have chronic dry eye you need to see an ophthalmologist who can prescribe prescription dry eye meds (I was prescribed Cequa). OTC drops are just not going to cut it.

NP. I saw an optometrist for dry eyes and got excellent treatment there but an ophthalmologist would also be good.

OP, have you done hot compresses, eyelid washes (I use ocusoft lid scrub), supplements, or prescription meds? There are various treatments for dry eyes and eye drops are only one part of the treatment. Also make sure you are using the right eye drops.

My doctor said the drops almost never work. I get duct plugs and they’re a game-changer.

Have you asked an eye doctor?

Well that's not true! I'm being treated for dry eyes and my doctor has me do over the counter drops 4x a day and along with medication on and off depending the season.

But they aren’t working for OP. So she probably needs to see a doctor and go the prescription route.

Np nope sounds like op doesn't know how to use them right and is letting the expensive drops fall out of her eyes too quickly to work!

NP. You are using drops (which drops??) 4x/day AND Rx. You have to go to an MD to get the Rx.

I heard some lady on the radio saying she has tears made from her blood serum. They somehow spin it down and turn it into drops. She said it was the only thing that worked for her, but had some kind of autoimmune problem. She mentioned it’s not covered by insurance and it costs her $275 each time for about 20 small bottles.
