My son and I will be visiting Harrisonburg this weekend. He is considering applying to JMU. Any recommendations for things to do or places to eat on or off campus? |
Visit the Arboretum on campus - beautiful.
Restaurants - we like Jimmy Madison’s, Local Chop and Grill, Magnolia’s, Clementine Cafe, Capital Ale House. Have fun! |
This is great! Thank you! |
Farms |
We were just there for their Summer Band Camp and had a very nice lunch at the Xenia Kebab grille. Service was fast and the food itself delicious.

agree with all of this plus Bella Luna for pizza cute downtown and Massanutten is about 15-20 minutes from campus. There is a lavender farm nearby that has a vineyard. I haven't tried any of the wines but the farm is beautiful and has live music on the weekends. |
^^ meant to add
We have many times done the Massanutten Scenic Chairlift and very much enjoyed the hike to the top to see a lot of the Valley below. If your family is into mountain biking, they’ll take your bike to the top too and you can have a wild ride down. |
These are all great suggestions! I’ve never been to the area and had no idea what was there! |
If you are a reader, plan to go to the Green Valley Bookfair. Great prices on books. |
I love reading! And since I’ll be on my own for a few hours, this is the perfect suggestion! |
If you’re into hiking, there are lots of options at Shenandoah National Park.

Magpie and the Little Grill. |
Go to Kline's Dairy Bar.

Shenandoah Caverns is less than 30 mins away. It's smaller than Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns is about 40 mins away. |
Seconding the lavender farm. It's cute for an hour or so on a nice day. |
