date night/bday dinner recs in DC?

I was thinking pineapple and pearls or rose's luxury but we both work on the Hill but don't actually have to be at work the night we have free for dinner. So, ideally something a little more centrally located (we live in Shepherd Park).

We haven't gone out for a nice dinner in ages so anything recommended, we're unlikely to have tried. Eat most things but not a big fan of traditional pasta heavy italian.

Almeda in Petworth, Elle in Mt. Pleasant, Thip Khao in Columbia Heights, St. James or Maydan near U Street

+1 to Maydan

Causa is another possibility. We had a nice dinner at their Amazonia upstairs restaurant and it was phenomenal.

DP: Re-upping this thread hoping for a few more suggestions, including Montgomery County. Celebrating a milestone anniversary!

+1 (or its sister, Ellie Bird in Falls Church if you're in VA). L'Avant-Garde or L'Ardente.
