What if even non-public placements don’t work?

Anonymous
DD in elementary school has a lot going on is medically and social-emotionally fragile. Is on grade level and no disruptive behaviors.

Every school setting has failed. Approved for non-public placement, but nothing seems to fit. Either there are programs for kids with “behaviors” that have academics on grade level OR programs for more severe cases that are below grade level academically. We used up all our IIS (home and hospital) allowance.

Any thoughts? In MoCo.

I’m ready to just end the IEP madness…

I’m sorry, OP - I also have a tricky to place kid who needs behavioral and social supports plus above grade/on grade level academics. In our case it’s been two okay/not great fit non-public placements, plus one disaster of a public placement. The other option is homeschooling - a lot of families go that route or an online school like Fusion.

You might want to try cross posting this in the special needs forum.

We had to revoke to get out of a bad placement. Luckily we were able to do the virtual academy- I feel sad that that is no longer an option. My son took about two years of healing out of the classroom before we tried another placement (so far, so good). Don’t rule anything out!

My neighbor tried everything, and then decided to homeschool.

Just homeschool. So much easier.

I have NT kids and SN kids. The truth is that many kids in both groups are not in an ideal school setting for them. With NT kids, you are just kind of stuck and you have to grit it out in whatever your boundary school is regardless of whether or not it’s working. With SN kids you have a few more options but you might ultimately end up in the same place with a placement that is not quite the right fit. You have to make a judgement call about what matters most to you.

OP: can you do an accredited virtual school and then do a lot of enrichment activities after school...if you have the means, pay for a sitter to stay with them during the day? I know this is a tall order for many families and don't know what your work/financial situation is

Can you describe what failing looks like? It would be easier to problem solve with you if we understood the problem.
