Uber—Are we over tipping?

Anonymous
We really only Uber to/from airport and occasionally when on vacation. Our ride to the airport is typically around $35, and my DH tips $10, because anything less feels cheap. Last time we took an Uber home from the airport, the ride SUCKED. The driver, it seemed, did everything he could to hit every light, go just under the speed limit, etc. DH still felt compelled to tip the $10.

I was chatting with a friend about how nice it would be to take a short Uber on-demand instead of the place we are visiting’s scheduled public transportation, but the ride was $4 and my husband would want to tip at least that amount, and $8 for a quick five minute ride seems crazy when we can do the train for so much less. My friend was aghast that we even tip for a ride that short.

So, what’s the story with tipping an Uber?

I tip $0. I hate tipping. Only tip my server and hair/nail stylist. Those are people I might see again, otherwise I'm only tipping to be nice.

NP who hasn’t gotten a ride in a while but, don’t drivers rate riders, or is that a thing of the past?

The rating happens w/out knowing if the rider tipped.

This is why I tip, regardless of how good or bad the ride is.

I tip $4-5 if the driver gave good service (like helped with bags). If the drive was very short, like $10-12 fare and they took a while to get to me, I tip $2-3 because I know it’s less lucrative for the driver. But if the fare is in the $20 and up range I generally don’t tip or just tip $1.

That ride doesn’t sound like it sucked! Uber rides that suck are things like:
- speeds erratically
- picks you up down the block from your address
- tries to pick you up across the street and refuses to cross to get you
- stops in the middle of the street to pick up or drop off
- stinks like weed
- stinks like BO or poop
- filthy car
- weird questions

What if the ride is like $6 and in a super touristy/busy area and they are staged there waiting?

I love tipping for Uber or Lyft because I can tip an odd amount. Like $2 on a $4 ride. Back when we used cabs and paper money, it would be weird like $5 and keep the change feels cheap, but making someone give you ones just to hand an extra $1 back also feels weird. Now if it’s a $4.37 ride, I can tip $1.09 and not feel like a cheapskate because the app prompted me to give 25%.

Different poster, but I would probably tip $2 on a $6 ride, plus $1 per bag if we have any and they helped put them in the trunk.

Probably wouldn’t tip

I've only taken uber for 50 and above (airport rides). I usually tip 5.

Wasn’t the point of Uber that we didn’t have to tip? Why did that have to change?

I would tip around $5 on a $35 Uber. $10 is way to much.

I don’t tip for Ubers. The prices have gotten out of control.
