Best safeway/giant in NW DC

Anonymous
We are a carless family living in NW DC. We rent a car once a month to do errands. What is your favorite safeway/giant grocery store for a big resupply. We are not looking for a Costco or an upscale supermarket (i.e., no wholefoods/Wegmans).

The Cathedral Commons Giant is large, fairly new, and very well stocked for a Giant. There's a garage underneath with validated parking and elevator up to the store; enter the garage on either the Macomb or Newark Street sides a block west of Wisconsin.

The new Westbard Giant in Bethesda.

I'm the Cathedral Commons PP and I also endorse this idea, though it might be more of a schlep for someone living in DC.

Honestly, I don't think there's a Safeway I'd waste the time and rental on.

If you can get to the Cathedral Commons Giant, you can get to the Wegman's and it's upscale but competitively priced. The Wegman's out in the burbs will have every brand, but the urban ones like the one near Tenley lean heavily on Wegman's house brand for nearly everything. You absolutely can get great prices AND good quality.

I hate buying meat from Giant and Safeway—gotten it home and opened the package too many times to smell rotting meat. Wegmans butchers on site. Also has fresh fish, which if you know how to buy it, is very cost efficient. Giant just has low quality frozen, which is expensive AND gross.

Girl, embrace the city lifestyle and do grocery delivery. It works so well in NW DC, they have dedicated trucks and they bring everything right to your apartment door. There is no need to schlep your groceries home yourself. Giant and Safeway are fine options. Drizly app for alcohol.

+1. Wegman's meat and fish are the way to go, and it's right there. As long as you have the car, I'd check them out.

This is the way to go if you have money to burn and you don't care about quality.

Nothing like asking for a head of fresh garlic and getting a jar of diced garlic because the picker said no garlic was available. Or asking for rotini and getting gluten free shells. Or asking for 3lbs of 94/6 hamburger and getting 1 pound of 80/20 hamburger patties.

OP here. We do delivery for most things most of the time or we walk to our local stores/markets. Once a month we spend part of the day driving and shopping.
