Extreme Brain Fog and Weight Gain

Anonymous
Any tips to feel like myself again? I’ve always been slim and now I’ve managed to gain an absurd amount of weight in the last two years. I am also having trouble focusing on everyday things that used to come easy for me.

Are you post menopause or in perimenopause?

Do you exercise regularly?

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Peri, same exercise routine as before. I had my thyroid checked years ago no issues.

I’m 44 and starting combined birth control for my peri symptoms, the most troubling of which is the brain fog. Still have normal period. I’ll let you know if it works!

Things can happen with the thyroid at any point. Checking thyroid is a good place to start. Could also be something like Cushings.

Hormones--I could not do math equations without hormones.

The answer is HRT. My brain fog has gotten much better, I sleep through the night, and I’ve lost 5 lbs without trying.

This sounds like hypothyroidism, OP. You cannot leave it untreated. Please get bloodwork, and ask for TSH, T4 and T3.

How would TSH, T4, and T3 appear on the lab report? What are normal ranges versus red flags?

Extreme symptoms means you should see your doctor

For those who went on HRT, how old are/were you when you began?

I am experiencing extreme brain fog and insomnia (on occasion). What PP wrote about doing math equations really rings true for me. I feel like I had part of my brain removed!

I am a weird case. Normal-ish periods, but got heavy and short to the end (joked that my body was trying hard) My period stopped and then I went to hell. Brain Fog, gained 15 pounds in the space of 6 months when I had always been slim, extreme insomina, and hot flashes.

Always had thyroid issues and so regularly monitored not the issue.

I tried exercise, calorie watching during the 6 months and for another 6 months. The scale held but could not lose weight. I was miserable.

Finally started HRT. Holy sh*t life changing. Was happier, thinking better, decreased hot flashes and I lost 3 pounds the first month doing nothing different. Second month, upped the dosage and now I am sleeping like a baby, ZERO hot flashes, I feel sharp again and I have lost another 2 pounds doing nothing different.

It has been amazing.
