Extended day middle school?

What do MS students do in extended day? Do parents have to pick up or can they can take afterschool bus home?

We usually have to work until 5. Onthe fence if our rising 6th grader should be in extended day. Or just use a mix of after school activities and buses + let them come home early sometimes. Not sure what it offers.

No one does extended except kids who are untrustworthy to go home alone, at least according to my kids

Same report from my kid. VERY few do extended day.

I work in a public middle school. Extended day/aftercare is filled with kids who either can’t be trusted at home or their parents want to spend as little time with them as possible. So, it’s the annoying ones.

It’s a chaotic environment and I would never enroll my child.

Extended day at APS is a check in where kids are allowed to stay inside the school late, hang out in the cafeteria (board games?), go to after school clubs, and (I think) check themselves out whenever. Minimal supervision yet it’s expensive.

Most schools have after school clubs and sports Mon-Thu. I wish my son and his friends would join some clubs but instead they walk home and play video games together,

Some schools have community centers attached that are open.

Same from mine. I had two very different kids go through middle school and couldn’t get either to stay after for anything. Both came home and did whatever until we got out of work.

Very few do the after-care program in middle school in APS, which is called check in.

There are sports in APS in middle school but any that are tryout, a 6th grade is pretty unlikely to make the team. A lot of clubs meet once a week. The school musical/play is a good option in the spring (either cast or crew) and keeps them a bunch of days after school (not all).

Otherwise, it's a looooong afternoon for them. Best case they are hanging out with friends but that can also sometimes worst case with the shenanigans they get up to.

My kid gets home at 3 so it isn’t that long of an afternoon, especially when he has sports practice.
OP be aware that clubs don’t start right away or take breaks so you can’t rely on them all the time. My kid was so tired from getting up early and the chaos of middle school he usually just wanted to come home
