high school volleyball tryout--can we miss one day?

Anonymous
My daughter is new to the high school volleyball team tryouts. There are three days scheduled for the tryouts. Should she attend all three days? We have an appointment on the second day, so I'm unsure if she can leave early that day or if she can miss it altogether. I just want to know if it is necessary to attend all three days before I cancel the schedule. Thank you!

This depends on the school. At our local HS, tryouts for any team, even the freshman team, will be extremely competitive. Either way I recommend moving the appointment if that’s possible to not miss tryouts.

It’s a bad idea. Unless it’s a no cut sport or unpopular, missing could result in your child not getting a spot. Tryouts are posted well in advance so it’s not like you couldn’t have known when you made the appointment. I have seen kids who are known to the coach make the team when they couldn’t try out due to an injury.

Move the appointment.

Our school has a hard rule that if you don’t attend all of tryouts you can’t be on the team. They have passed up superstar players as a result, but I appreciate that everyone gets treated equally.

Reschedule the appointment

If she wants to play on the team go to all the tryouts. If she doesn’t, skip that one.

Move the appointment.

My HS volleyball coach added a day of tryouts after the 3rd and final day of tryouts. I was among the girls immediately cut who couldn't make the last day of tryouts. In my case it was because I had a scheduled work shift and couldn't miss it or I wouldn't receive my final 2 weeks' paycheck. We didn't have a lot of money and that check was a big deal (not sure if withholding pay in that way was legal, but I was 16 so I didn't have a lot of agency).

If she doesn't make the team and you went to the appointment, she'll always regret it.

No you can’t miss. If it can be moved, definitely do so.

If it is truly something very important that cannot be moved, email the coach now.

You would have to check with the HS specific policy and culture of that sport but my daughter’s school generally penalizes girls - cut them, keep them off varsity, less playing time a for missing preseason for an appt in her fall sport (field hockey).

Also, she should ask the coach about the policy. Now that she is in HS, she has to handle all this. you shouldn’t have a lot of interaction with Coach beyond the annual parent group meeting.

Less playing time for missing a preseason activity? Your coach sounds insane. Once the rosters are set, tryouts should be forgotten and the best should play

All depends how good your daughter is in volleyball AND how tall she is. If she is 5’10” or taller and has played volleyball before or is really , then sure she can miss a day.
