Why are basic traffic rules not enforced?

Anonymous
No one stops their cars at stop signs - they use them as suggestions. I am always throwing my arms up at cars when I am a pedestrian.

They don't stop at the stop sign line, instead they stop over the line in the crosswalk.

Illegal tints.

Illegal cell phone usage.

Lack of turn signals.

Excessive speeding.

Police don't do much to make the road safer. I rarely even see police cars, and if I do, they are traveling to/from the station and don't enforce the law. What is the county/state/country doing to make our roads safe?

Traffic enforcement is racist.

OK but still necessary

This is why.

Personally I’d rather just deal with the bad driver behavior than having riots every summer because cops shot a guy who pulled a knife or a gun on them when they pulled him over for running a stop sign, and then everyone gets mad, marches, protests, riots and loots.

“Officer! Help! There’s a bank robbery on Main Street”

“I’ll get to it right after I finish ticketing this person for not using a turn signal”

Can the police department not do both?

Because it is racist. You know there will be a 'disproportionate number of stops with minorities', which will lead to a bunch of uproar. Enforcing the rules and law is racist if too many nonwhite people get stopped. That's the world we live in. It's looney toons, but that's what the voters want.

Currently every dept is hiring. Not enough officers for enforcement of minor traffic issues.
Tint is hard to enforce and write for unless you have a tint meter. Most depts don’t budget for these devices an app on a phone won’t hold up in court.

It’s not “can” they do both, it’s “should”. Enforcing minor infractions is just not cost effective. You would have to hire many more officers to crack down on some of these tick-tacky violations.

I am I agreement though about stop signs…especially in neighborhoods. No one stops at them. There needs to be creative solutions there. Maybe a speed bump at all signs? When we went to Iceland, some stop signs and speed limits were regulated by cement curbs in road. You had to slow down in order to navigate road.

I remember reading an article about how San Francisco was trying to cut down on fare evasion in the BART. They said that past enforcement had been racially biased, so they went to a system that would eliminate that bias. This consisted of randomly picking a car and then checking everyone on board. Turns out that doing that led to very disproportionate number of African Americans being ticked. So, that system was scrapped as well.

Then just come up with a system that only checks white people. Problem solved.

The one that hacks me off is license plate violators. Obviously illegal covers on plate, tags many months out of date (MD).. I feel like if I did that, I'd get pulled over right now. And the dark tag cover crowd skews UMC/rich as much anything from my observations.

Also, its probably a good idea that we, for all things, not just minor traffic stuff, hire a force of "Police". And let the actual police deal with more serious matters like violent crime.

"Police" could do traffic work, shoplifting, minor property crimes, drunks, etc and have LEO cred but just have a limit to their duties and their training needs.

Sort of like when you go to the doctor and the NP or PA walks in. They can summon the MD if needed, but they can also handle lots of things just fine themselves.

Really? I'm not familiar with the background, but the first story I found was "Nearly half of BART fare-evasion citations go to blacks, but board votes to expand the enforcement program" (https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Nearly-half-of-BART-fare-evasion-citations-go-to-13264277.php)

I think if you have a suspicion of tint the officer should be able to collect a sample
