All new camrys, accords, civics come with wheels, yes? And most victims will get new rims and tires via insurance if they are victimized. Yes? They aren't buying from shady sources to refit their new car.
So, why are these specific cars (and a few others, Acura I guess) targeted so often? If everyone with a brand new camry has wheels and tires, why would they need new ones? (Other than theft obv). Is it maybe the tires? There are so many no name tire places around these days with "used" tires. So I can imagine the tires are easy to "wholesale" but that's going a long way for a few bucks. Anyway, they whole thing makes no sense. If were any and all cars being targeted, ok. But is not. Its almost always a Camry, Civic, Accord, or Acura. If anyone understands this "business model", please enlighten me. |

Not op but its an issue here in the West End Alex |

Tires.
New tires are about $550-$800 for most cars for a set of four lower-end/budget tires. They can be twice that for premium/performance tires. So if you have a 3 year old Honda Accord, and need tires at 50k miles, you’re either spending $600+ or you’re going to go steal the wheels off some brand new Accord with paper tags. There’s enough people who will choose the “steal” option to make it a regular occurrence. |
| I know a neighborhood in Bethesda close to the DC line where this happens. |
Literally last night 44 cars wheels and rims were stolen and 20+ cars stolen out of a locked parking garage in the west end! |
| Do they sell them overseas? Those cars are some of the most popular. |
More likely 10-20 year Accord. |
Huh? What, you think it takes 10-20 years to wear out a set of tires because it’s a Honda? Daffuq? |
| There's a DC tow truck driver on tiktok who posts about the wheel theft and it's all over the region. |
OP Here. Seen him, and seen sooo many cars on blocks. Many in reasonable neighborhoods. Often hotels though, and similar. But they are usually select models. If it were tires, all cars would be targets or at least not so much focus on just a few models, right? |
