For many reasons (mostly third child on the way reasons), we are looking to move out of NYC in the near future. DH only commutes into NYC once a week, sometimes less than that. But we'd still like to be close enough to enjoy what the city has to offer - a weekend outing, week night dinner/show, etc.
We've narrowed our search down to Scarsdale and Greenwich. I love that Greenwich is on the water and seems to have a great community feel but I know the schools aren't the best out of the bunch (or at least, not to Scarsdale levels). However, there are many private schools in the area. It's also further from the city. Scarsdale also has a lot going for it - good schools, close to the city, cute town center, a little more central, etc. We've researched housing and we'd be able to afford something comfortable in either area. If you're familiar with both areas, which would you choose? |
Rye |
DH is from Greenwich and had a nice childhood there. He went to public school and did just fine in life, but most the of the people we know who raised their kids there sent them to private school. |
\ Rye over Scarsdale? |
I'd look there. Larchmont, too. |
And Bronxville. |
Not Larchmont. Scarsdale. |
I grew up in Greenwich, and attended public schools, as did all my siblings. You get more land there vs Scarsdale since the town is more spread out, and you have beach access. I find it’s much more money and status obsessed in the past decade or so—people who have money are anxious to make sure everyone knows how wealthy they are. Scarsdale is closer to the city, has excellent schools (Edgemont), and wealth is not so aggressively flaunted. Scarsdale is more of a community; Greenwich is more geographically spread out, and people tend to gravitate to the people they know from their kids’ private schools, their clubs, or activities. Much as I lived growing up in Greenwich, I’d pick Scarsdale (or Rye, or Larchmont). |
Bronxville is so cute and the high school is beautiful! |
How often will you have to commute to NYC? If just a few days a week, id consider Darien or Westport for more of a community feel and a beach |
Greenwich. ore reversse offers the most. Great downtown, water, tons of restaurants, shopping, clubs, etc...
Scarsdale is very Jewish. friend lived there and moved after 3 years to southport. |
I am probably too old to say this but I went to Greenwich middle and HS and at the time they were #1 in the state. That's why my parents who had jobs in the financial world in Manhattan moved there. But this was early 80s so my info is what, maybe 40 yrs out of date now... |
Are there many Jewish folks in Greenwich ? I ask because I just realized that everyone whom I know from Scarsdale is Jewish (never thought about it before reading the above comment) and everyone I know from Greenwich is not. Also, not sure Darien would be a comfortable place for some religions. |
I know some Jewish families in Greenwich, but I think there are more in Scarsdale or Westport |
Yes, there's plenty of Jewish families. When I grew up there it was about 50/50 Jewish and Catholic. |
