| What is it about Vienna that makes it so great? People seem to rave about it, and not just about the schools. |
| I think people like the community feel of living in the town. Lots of family friendly ammenities. |

I grew up in McLean and yet we bought in Vienna.
We love it for many reasons. 1) The W & OD trail. We use it all the time. 2) The incredible community feeling. Very diverse and a great neighborhood to raise kids. 3) Ideal for commuting. DH works downtown and I work in the burbs, but I had a different job in MD when we moved here, and it was still relatively easy. 4) Fantastic range of restaurants, without having to deal with Tysons. |
| I also think it has a nice range of residents, from elderly to families, and very wealthy to middle class. It also has community pools, festivals, fireworks, community center activities and free concerts. |
This is NOT a selling point for Vienna! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE living in Vienna, but I work downtown and the commute is truly awful. It's an hour each way on a GOOD day - either by car or by Metro (and my office is near the Orange Line so I don't even have to change trains). Spending 2 hrs/day commuting by Metro sucks - then add in being pregnant and routinely getting stuck in cars with no A/C during one of the hottest summers on record and it's intolerable. The commute is far from ideal. |
ITO. We lived in Vienna but eventually moved to McLean because DH was tired of the commute to downtown DC by car or Metro. It is a very family-friendly place and I'd recommend it highly to those working in Northern Virginia, but people thinking of living in Vienna and working in DC should make sure they can put up with a long commute for an extended period. |

As others have said: Community. When I walk around town, I run into people that I know...it is like living in a small town with big city amenities.

1. Schools.
2. Ideal location for commuting to points in Northern Virginia. I have an HOV sticker and it takes me 25-30 minutes by car to Crystal City. 3. Sense of community. The entire town is pretty walkable, no isolated cul-de-sacs off of a major highway. While Route 123 is still pretty strip-mallish, the Church Street corridor is very nice. But even 123 in town is about as pedestrian-friendly as a four-lane highway is ever going to get. 4. Fairly low (even by Northern Virginia standards) crime. It'd have been nice if they had built a bypass along Nutley ending on Route 7 somewhere near the Toll Road. That'd have made the town better during rush hour for everyone -- residents seeking to shop after work and commuters. |
| Ew. Vienna? Suburbs really suck. Give me upper NW or Bethesda/CC at the furthest but if you work in DC why oh why would you want to live out there? Character is as bland as day old beer. |
| Not everyone works in downtown DC. If you work in Tysons Corner, Reston or Fairfax the location is FABULOUS. |
Upper NW and Bethesda/CC are great, but totally not the topic of this thread, but I guess you couldn't resist throwing in your snooty nastiness. Vienna is very nice, but as others have said, the commute into DC is not easy. |

I like Vienna bc our neighborhood is so cozy and the neighbors all know each other (sometimes it can be a bad thing) but overall its great and we all look out for each other, our animals and kids. We have impromptu dinner parties, playdates and when we get snowed it we all get excited.
As far as the town - I love that everything I need is relatively close, Giant, Whole Foods, CVS, Toy Store, Starbucks, Ethnic grocery stores. I love the feel of a 'town' and that there are old stores and new stores. I feel close enough to Tysons w/o dealing with the traffic of Tysons. Although I wish I was closer to the city I cant complain - it is pretty close still for being the suburbs. Love this area. I love other areas but to me this has it all w/o breaking the bank on our house. |

One perk to living in Vienna is that you won't run into this PP. |
This poster gives "upper N/W, Bethesda/CC at the furthest" a bad reputation that makes me want to stay away from those areas with a ten foot pole. Yuck. So snooty. |
