S/O: How hard is pre-algebra for 7th and how many people take it?

Anonymous
Is that where most kids end up? And, how much work is it?

Mine took it in 6th grade and never had homework.

They probably just finished it at school.

Lots of kids take algebra in 7th grade so I'm not sure I understand the question.

Yes, there was a lot of time, he usually didn’t need extra help (didn’t get that from me)

Is pre-algebra the standard path from Math 6? Is that what the bulk of these kids do?

The baseline class is math 6.

Some kids will take pre-algebra in 6th but more take in 7th. The remainder take it in 8th.

No, math 7 is.

Mine took pre algebra in 7th. Didn’t have enough teachers to teach all the kids who qualified for it in 6th. He had a lot of math homework in 7th.

No. All the kids don’t take pre-algebra in 7th, nor should they.

District wide about 15% of kids do pre-Algebra in 6th. The rest take Math 6. From there, I don’t know how many do pre-algebra in 7th but I would say definitely more than half because it’s long been the standard path in APS to do Algebra 1 in 8th grade. It’s not too hard if your child did well in Math 6. This year the requirement to go into Pre-Algebra in 7th from Math 6 is an SOL score of 475 on the Math 6 SOL and 225 on the MAP test.

In LCPS, PreA in 7th is the middle level. Some kids take algebra in 7th, others take Math 7 and then take PreA in 8th.

It really depends on your child, OP. My kids took Algebra in 6th and 7th. The one who took it in 6th hardly ever brought homework home, she just did it all in class. Granted, she's above average. The other always had homework every day at home and we helped him with certain concepts. So again, it really depends on the kid and how their brain understands mathematical reasoning.
