Sigh, we planned a family trip before knowing I was pregnant. I checked with my doctor and he said flying is okay and he did not have any concerns.
I’m 12 weeks now and we are leaving tomorrow. My mom called me this morning to say how irresponsible it was for us to fly and how it can be risky. I know my mom is not a doctor but she’s making me feel bad. What recommendations did your doctor offer you guys about traveling? Or did you personally travel at 12 weeks? I am going to call the doctor again to triple check… |
| Absolutely no issue. My sibling is an OBGYN, also 12 weeks pregnant right now, and leaving on a plane cross country tomorrow (hello sister if you see this you'll know it is me I'm sure!) Your mom is completely wrong here. |
| 12 weeks is fine. Your mom is being cray |
| Your mom is being ridiculous and is wrong. Barring other risk factors, it’s perfectly safe to fly in the first two trimesters, and the third to an extent. My doctor advised me to wear compression socks on the plane, but that’s it. I also chose to not walk through the x-ray scanner— that was a personal choice. But then you get a pat down, which is also not ideal. |
| Your mom doesn't know what she's talking about. Your doctor does and already said it's fine! |
|
I personally traveled several times at 12-20 weeks, including at least a couple of flights across the county. If I recall correctly, my doctor gave me the first two trimesters to travel, then told me to stay close to home during the third trimester.
I've known people who had earlier restrictions, but only if they were high risk for some specific reason. Does you mom have any specific concerns? What exactly is she worried about? Do you have any high risk factors? |
| Of course it's fine to fly. Plus, not to be maudlin, but if something goes wrong at 12 weeks, nothing can be done anyway. Have fun on your trip. |
| The first trimester is when it's safest to fly, OP. Please do so before you can't anymore. |
|
I flew a bunch with OB’s blessing. It it perfectly safe. FWIW, my mom also flew while pregnant with me so even 40 years ago we knew it was safe.
Enjoy! |
Yes, why would you need to triple check? Did your mom secretary get a medical degree? |
|
Your mom has anxiety over this pregnancy. Something to keep in mind. It's not going to get better.
But other than that, you should be fine. |
| Totally fine. Please listen to your doctor instead of your mom. |
|
You should respectfully tell your mom that you appreciate she wants the best for you and her yet-to-be-born grandchild but that this has no basis in reality or medical advice and you can't let her anxiety control your reasonable choices. In my family my husband would be OK helping each out to my mom to say this, sensitively, and she would probably respond better to him than to me. YMMV.
Fly! |
| Suddenly, not secretary. |
