Has anyone been able to get a quasi full ride to the schools? What would it take? Or with merit, how much should one expect to pay? Please break it down to me like I am in K.
Really exploring the most affordable path for my DC. |
| One of these things is not like the other… |
| WVU merit is very straightforward. There is a chart on the website showing what you can expect based on test scores and/or GPA. For example, a student with a 3.8+ GPA and 1300+ SAT/30+ ACT would get $5k instate and $17k OOS. That same student would get $3.5k/$14k if test optional, and so on. |
Does this mean they subtract 14k from the yearly tuition? So say the tuition is $28k, you get 14k paid? Does that tuition include housing? |
| FWIW WVU cut a number of programs and 143 professor positions due to financial problems in 2023. https://mountainstatespotlight.org/2023/09/15/wvu-board-cuts-degrees-layoffs/ |
| South Carolina is a much harder admit than Bama and WVU. |
| Please, please-can someone tell me what a kid with a 3.5 unweighted GPA/2 varsity sports be expected to pay at these schools per year? |
Yes, subtract from housing. Still need to pay room and board. |
| I meant tuition above. Sorry. |
Not trying to be snarky, it’s impossible to predict because merit is not guaranteed and can change from year to year. Apply and see what aid is given. If the in-state rate is necessary, apply to in-state safeties too, that is the only guarantee. |

Merit is usually a discount off Tuition only. Room and Board are separate costs that you would need to factor into the Total Cost of Attendance.
The only time both Tuition and Room and Board are covered is when a student gets what is called “A Full Ride”Scholarship. |
| Look at New Mexico. |
| My daughter got a named scholarship at UofSC (assuming you meant that and not Southern California, sorry if not). Out of state, 4.0uw, 36 ACT, tons of rigor and very impressive extracurriculars. They chose an Ivy instead, but they offered a nice package with full-ride and $15k a year enrichment fund. |
And no state flagship is giving anyone a full ride with a 3.5 GPA. Well, possibly with a 1600 SAT and a really, really good explanation for the GPA (loss of a parent; extended hospitalization, or serious ongoing medical issues). But still probably not. |
Yes. Facts. |
