Spend $1500 for beach vacation with ILs or 3x that but without ILs?

Dilemma: ILs live at a beach and we could go stay there and get an all expenses paid beach vacation (their offer). Only would have to pay for flights.

OR we could rent our own house near a different beach, but spend more in total ($4500 with house for our family, travel, and food)

What would you do? ILs are normal decent people but I course prefer it to be just us. But it’s a big cost difference.

Spend money for freedom and privacy.

It really on the in laws and your relationship with them. If the relationship is pleasant and there are no conflicts, stress, heck, I’d save 3K.

+1 Totally depends on the in-laws.

Since your ILs sound fine, go with that option.

Is time off an issue? I'd go to in laws. And then plan a second smaller vacation on your own.

What would the rest of your family prefer? My kids prefer more people, being with their grandparents, in a more the merrier way.

Drop the kids off at the in laws with some cash. Take the remaining 3k and go get a hotel nearby. Tell them to only call if it’s an emergency.

Not enough information. How much is 3k to you? Is this your only vacation for the foreseeable future? How will your in laws respond if you don't go? Are their kids involved? If so, when else will the see the grands? Seems like a lot to pay in cost and in losing good will with the in laws for only a mild preference.

I don't like the beach so I would pay to go elsewhere. But if I liked the beach, I would stay with the in-laws.

We personally had this choice this summer. We chose the in-laws but also did a long beach weekend earlier on the summer. If you can swing the time off, can you do both?
Anonymous
Another vote for both if you can

We can’t do both because of limited time off. This will be our second family only vacation if we do it.

This. I love my in laws and enjoy staying with them when we visit them at their beach house. If it was this option with my mom, I'd choose renting my own place.

For a beach vacation, I'd stay with the in laws. You don't need to be alone as a family for a beach vacation. I'd feel differently for a city vacation where you'd be doing lots of sightseeing.
