bug bites/rash when wake up in morning- what could this be

Anonymous
DD wakes up in the morning with what look like small mosquito bites on her torso. This started to occur last summer, and I took DD to a dermatologist who said they look like bug bites. We had a pest control company check for bed bugs (we even had them bring in the sniffer dogs) and they found no evidence of bed bugs and couldn’t figure out the issue. We brought in a second company and they said same. Both are reputable DC area pest control companies.

DD then went back to college and had no issues (she came home very rarely this year and none of us can remember if the problem occurred over winter break).

But the problem came back again when she arrived in May. These look like small mosquito bites, although I guess could be a rash, and they are all over her front torso, and now she may have some on her arms, too (she works outside, so can’t be sure the arms ones aren’t actual mosquito bites).

We wash all bedding weekly and use free and clear detergent, and DD uses the same detergent at college where she didn’t have the problem.

DH wants to replace her bed frame (wood) and mattress and bedding - I say those are expensive and without knowing what the issue is, we may unecessarily replace them or may replace them only the have the problem infect the new ones. But I am at a loss for what to do next.

I would appreciate any ideas what these could be or how we could further investigate.

Why don’t one of you guys (the parents) sleep in her bed for a few days and see if you get bites?

I think they sound like flea bites. They hide in mattresses and lay eggs there. You need to replace the mattress and heavily vacuum any rugs / use flea powder and basically fumigate her room / the house.

All her clothes also need to go into a hot wash.

If it was fleas, with this length of time, you'd have an infestation in your whole house. I'd probably do what DH suggests too.

Switch beds with her for a few days and see if you get them and/or if she gets them in your room. One of my kids gets this exact same thing if he’s near any clothing or bedding that has had a dryer sheet or fabric softener. any chance you’re using those?

And/or have her sleep in a different bed/sofa and see if she still gets them.
