| I have a baby about to start solids. His older brother has ASD. As anyone with ASD in their family knows, the relationship with food is ... complicated, and it can become easy for ASD kiddos to get hooked on a handful of foods to the exclusion of their nutritional needs. I would therefore like to be thoughtful and intentional about how I start my baby on solids. Has anyone with ASD experience formed cohesive views on how they wish they'd started their baby on solids or what they'd do with a future baby? My inclination is to try to incorporate vitamin-rich protein sources into purees (e.g. a dash of organ meat) and to try to work in some fermented foods for gut health (e.g., sauerkraut or homemade fermented vegetables). Thanks in advance |
| First, I'd see if it's even an issue. My kid liked most fruits, some vegetables and developing was obsessed with all things dairy and gluten. Then he got more restrictive with time to the point I probably gave yogurt, french toast or grilled cheese sandwiches more than I cared to. He also had digestive issues. Eventually we did the whole gluten free, dairy free thing gradually, which infuriated him, but once both were out of his system he ate absolutely anything with glee. We did determine he did not have Celiac (genetic test) or wheat allergy or dairy allergy, but likely gluten intolerance and he had almost no enzymes for digesting dairy. He's been a fantastic eater ever since when it comes to just about any healthy food as long as it has good flavor. He's somewhat of a gourmet. |
I forgot to mention the reason we did gluten free dairy free was the digestive issues. We wanted to try that before scopes and it did the trick. |
