| I can't go a few blocks around our house without encountering a couple. I used to be pretty indifferent about them but now I love them. They're always such happy dogs and they have those amazing eyes. I get it. I love the mid and small sized brown ones especially. |

The perfect dog is a border collie or border collie mix.
Doodles are okay though. |
+1 My mini berndoodle is perfection We get stopped everywhere b/c she's so cute and she's just the sweetest.
|
| Love my 7 year old labradoodle. Such a kind creature. Just wants to be everyone’s friend. |
|
My Havanese is the best dog!!
But doodle friends are great too. |

Doodles seem like decent dogs in theory (I tend to like mutts in general, and dogs with nicely proportioned bodies, and doodles are both) but they get a bad rep because they're marketed as this perfect "non-dog" dog and as a result purchased by a lot of first-time dog owners who either don't realize how much training has to go into a puppy or are not capable of doing it well. So you have these good-sized dogs that jump on people and pull at the leash and are generally rambunctious and offputting. And while the dog is spazzing out, the bad dog owner at the other end of the leash is incorrectly explaining why their dog is worth $5k from an Amish puppy mill because it's hypoallergenic (it's not).
It's not the dogs that create the bad reputation; it's the owners and the breeders. |
| I prefer the full labradors or goldens as opposed to the mix with the poodle. |
Disagree. Doodles are generally not hypoallergenic, which is their main selling point, and the combo of lab and poodle doesn't lend itself to a good temperament. Well-bred labs are good-natured people-pleasers, poodles are smart but not people-oriented the way labs are. The combo of smart breed + smart breed equals bored, destructive, poor behavior. |
My bernedoodle is a pleaser, smart quick learner, maybe a tad stubborn but easily redirected. Does not jump but does bark at trucks. Cannot fetch but loves to play chase. Never chews and never destructive. Works for us! |
| Why can't doodles fetch? Is it just a training thing or an issue with their mouths? I know a couple people with seemingly decently-trained doodles and none of their dogs are good at fetching. |
I really love labs and goldens, too, but they're too big. |
| For owners of doodles, can you suggest a few reputable breeders? We have been looking! |
Definitely not a mouth thing- we "fetch" with 2 balls.... If you throw a ball she will run and grab it then run away with it like its a game. If you throw a second ball she'll drop the first the run after the 2nd, haha. Even with high value treats, we could not teach her to retrieve a ball. They are goofy sweet pups. |
|
NO. I know several and they are neurotic as hell. Very very cute!! But insane and not easy to train.
Or maybe the people who get them are terrible at training dogs (or don't do the work) but I will take a hard pass on any sort of doodle. NO. |
| I've never met a well trained one, sorry. Not their fault but pretty universal. Which is a shame, because the ones I know well are all really smart - just bored and ill behaved. |
