Alice Munro is? was? one of my favorite authors, and I am so disappointed to read this (warning: sexual abuse)

I just saw this article. How vile.

I picked up a book of Munro's short stories, but didn't finish it because I found them kind of disturbing and the characters were people I just didn't want to engage with. I admit when I read this article about the abuse I was glad I had not gotten into Alice Munro. What a self-centered, awful person.

Her characters are selfish and awful. She was selfish and awful.

I am over the lionization of authors in general. Many of them are terrible people.

Horrible. A 9 year old "home wrecker"? I never could get into her stuff. Glad of that.

I just read the article. Andrea is a strong woman to have abused such abuse and to have survived her mother’s treatment toward her. Thank god hell exists for people like Alice and the rapist.

Truth.

I'd like an accounting of all the adult family members! Why the F didn't her father and stepmother bring charges? Why was she ever allowed to go back? Every adult who should have protected her failed not only her but every other child that pedophile abused.

She should be stripped of all awards even though she's dead.

I feel awful for the daughter-- Munro's reactions are truly unfathomable. I say that as a mother to 2 girls. And WTF with her response that her husband had "friendships" with other girls... was she really trying to make her daughter jealous? I just cannot.

This is terrible, but I felt validated as I also have never. been able to get into Munro's fiction. Even when it was put right in front of me (say in a New Yorker short story)

Horrible to read.... especially as someone who experienced something similar from my own mother.

But yes, I will still read her. I can still enjoy the art even if the artist is problematic/horrible in their personal life. Plan to reread some of my favorite short stories of hers with this information in mind, it's pretty interesting perspective.

Did they know? The daughter told the mother when she was an adult. And then pressed charges on her own.

Yes, she told her father and stepmother.

She told them as a child what was happening? Omg the whole family is sick.

Thank you for this breath of sanity. It is possible to separate the art from the artist.

This is a really gross way to say you are separating the art from the artist. Seems like you’re getting off on the abuse of a child.

I can not imagine being so weak minded that I'd consider sexual abuse between a child and a grown man "none of my business".

It's absolutely monstrous. There are many many men out there she could have found companionship with. But to ignore the horror your kid lived through to choose that man? Disgusting.
