1) Boiled potatoes. If you’re going to fuss with potatoes at all, make them good: mashed, baked, or roasted. Boiled? GTFO.
2) Boiled or steamed Brussels sprouts. Roasted only. Ideally with pancetta and balsamic glaze. 3) “Bowls” for dinner. Just no. |
| You had me on the first two. I love bowls. Specifically couscous bowls. |
| i thought this was going to be about exotic foods, and instead OP’s talking about boiled potatoes? |
And what would you define as “exotic,” PP? Hmm. I think we’ll have to think real hard about what you mean by that. |
😂😂 |
+1 Except give me all the bowls—rice, grain, noodle, or any other base for protein, vegetables, sauce and flair. OP, what happened to you that you can’t understand the appeal of a bowl? |
Very large cucumbers |
I love very large cucumbers. Fresh, pickled, in salads, you name it. |
| Goat cheese |
Ooooohhh exotic. Not…. |
Different PP. Huitlacoche for me. I understand it is not "exotic" in cultures that enjoy it, but fungal corn smut is exotic to my scope of experience. And durian -- anything that is banned from public transport because of the odor in a culture that eats in is probably too outside my wheelhouse. |

Spam.
I mean, I guess I understand it, as filling a need for non-perishable ready-to-eat protein. But to choose it when there are other options available? That I don't get. Most other things I'm OK with. Boiled potatoes are fine if you add butter salt and herbs. Bowls are awesome. Kinda with you on boiled or steamed brussel sprouts, but I realize that's just my preference and doesn't make them "weird", just not my favorite. |
| I don't understand leeks. They are too fussy, too sandy. Their taste is just "milder onion". I make potato leek soup (which is actually potato, onion, leek) with just the potato and onion (l'il extra) and it's perfect. |

Beets. Every year I’m tempted to buy them because they’re such a pretty color. And then I cook them and remember they taste like dirt.
Also natto. If it smells rotten, I cannot put it in my mouth, I’m sorry. |
Like cilantro, beets have a genetic component. They taste great to some people and literally like dirt to others, and it’s not a matter of taste, it is actually how the brain receives it. Like cilantro literally tastes like soap for people who are genetically predisposed to taste it that way. |
